yup
As much as I like that West Side Story (2021) is available for streaming on Disney plus now, it upsets me that the subtitles/captions SUCK for this particular movie, and in a way that's almost breathtaking in it's awfulness.
One thing this movie very pointedly did was to have the Puerto Rican characters speak/sing in Spanish sometimes, with no English subtitles. This was done INTENTIONALLY and really brings home one of the central questions of the story, which is: Who gets to call themselves "American"? What do "Americans" look like? What language do "Americans" speak? If they had subtitled the Spanish dialogue and NOT the English dialogue, it would have (even unintentionally) enforced the idea that "real Americans" speak English and don't understand Spanish.
My husband, who speaks Spanish pretty fluently, was curious to see how this essentially bilingual movie would be handled with the caption features available with streaming. Well... a few incidental Spanish words (inserted in English dialogue) were included in the captions, but any larger chunks of Spanish dialogue (or even song lyrics) were not transcribed at all. The words [speaking in Spanish] appeared in brackets, not even giving the audience the opportunity to translate it themselves. Even worse, when he switched to the Spanish captions, none of the Spanish dialogue was included in the captions. So, even if you SPEAK Spanish, if you're hard-of-hearing? Too bad! You only get to know what the English-speaking characters said! An entire song sung by the Sharks, La Borinqueña, was captioned only with [Singing in Spanish]. THE ENTIRE SONG. I'm so upset. I recognize that the logistics of how to caption/translate a bilingual movie within a habitually monolingual captioning system would be difficult (Like if you subtitle the movie in French, do you translate both the English AND the Spanish into French? Or pick one? And if so, which one?), but the way they did this not only makes a mockery of a very thoughtful artistic choice made by the filmmakers, but unconsciously reinforces one of the most central tragedies of the story.
