The Scarlet Letter~ Chapters 2-3

In chapters two and three of The Scarlet Letter Hester Prynne is being publicly shamed with her three month year old baby. When she gets out of jail, she is described as a beautiful and tall young woman.  On her breast is an embroidered bright red ‘A’ across her chest. She has to walk to the market place and stand on a platform for something like a trial. Her punishment is to stand on the platform for three hours with her child being ridiculed and that she must wear a badge of shame for the rest of her life. The badge of shame is the red ‘A’ symbolizing adultery. This reminds me of when people are publically shamed for their appearance. At the mall it’s the most obvious when people are pointing out other people’s clothing, hair, etc. and are laughing.

She wants to at least give the crowed a disdainful smile but she knows she is in front of a court. She has managed to build up a defense of all of the terrible words but she still wants to jump off of the platform.  She is reminiscent about her past when she looks at the village she grew up in and when she looks at her father like, she had no idea how she got there. The Reverends are trying to convince her to tell them who the child’s father is because her husband had gone on a trip and had supposedly died, while she was responsible for staying home and keeping up with things.  She continues to refuse to tell them who the father is. This reminds me of when people see their lives flash right before their eyes before they die.  It’s like that because this public shaming is basically death for her socially since everyone refuses to associate themselves with her now.

Soon a stranger with his Indian friend comes into the market place and he is shocked and horrified when he sees Ms. Prynne with her baby. She recognizes him but he motions to stay silent. He composes himself and starts asking the townspeople questions about her. The man is most likely her husband because of how shocked he acts.
