my first summer (2020)
Cine: My First Summer (2020)
I had no idea what I was getting into when I hit play, the synopsis made My First Summer seem like a w/w teen romance story but within the first three minutes of the movie, your hit with the illusion of a young woman trying to drown herself and another one dealing with her own form of unknown tragedy. I liked watching the innocence of Claudia and Grace. Through assumption, you assume Claudia has never had the luxury of being around people let alone people of her own age as she uses Grace to help her understand the world around her. Though a simple conversation with Grace between the police, you quickly learn what bonds these two young teens together. I got about 20mins into this movie and started questioning it, not in a "oh God why am I watching this..?."way but more in the trying to piece together the details that Claudia shares with Grace, the vague details that we learn about the tragedy and the vague details of why Claudia's hiding from the outside world. Watching My First Summer is like piecing together a puzzle but with enough pieces to let you continue with until you find which pieces fit. It isnt until the last five minutes of the movie that we truly understand what Grace had gone through beforehand, we start to understand that this movie is about a mother who ended her life, trying to take her daughter with her. We go with the assumption that the mother had mental health problems due to key words that Claudia mentions throughout the movie, as I mentioned before this movie is like a puzzle except it chooses to drip feed the information rather than hand it to the audience too quickly. My First Summer may not have been a story that was target towards me and that's okay but I did like how they used two sixteen year olds, I feel like if they made Grace and Claudia older, this story wouldn't of had the grasp of emotions like this. If the characters were much younger than the audience would question the duty of care. So, 16 felt like the right sweet spot. It's a good movie but just a little too slow for me. #myfirstsummer #myfirstsummermovie https://www.instagram.com/p/CogTHphPXGa/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
