Day 1 - Arrival at first camp
Tent City
After hours of driving knowing we are getting deeper into the vast dry Serengeti, we arrive at our first destination. Our last chance of a good meal and the warmth and safety of sleeping in a tent. The first thing I see is one of my favorite trees from child hood. The Tamarind tree. The seed pods are delicious and full of potassium and Vit B and Iron. I pray I see these along our trek.
On the ground there were vibrant emerald green droppings that look liked chicken feed pellets. Turns out they were Caterpillar poop. How cool. I feel anxious about what lays ahead. Knowing it was going to be a challenge sat well with me, but there is always the fear of the unexpected. Am I strong enough to do this so soon after recovering from the Hemorrhagic Dengue Virus. Just one mosquito bite when I was in the Panama Jungle for Discovery’s, Naked and Afraid. It took months of rehab to repair my body and get my strength back still getting pain every now and then.
There was a Unimog, a familiar troop carrying truck that I used to drive in the Army. I”m guessing that will be ours to travel to our next destination. To where, I don’t know yet. There are goats tied to it too. I have no idea what lies ahead.
I’m still feeling unsure about a lot of things. I can already sense those who will be part of this adventure trying to place their position within the group. Me, well, I think it’s the time to observe and listen to all that is going on around me. I figure it’s always best to stand back and learn.
There are a few that I’ve come to admire because of their demeanor and sensibility. Christanne, a very tall, young gorgeous lady. Reggie whom I suspect is an incredibly strong willed and caring man. Keith, whom is a fan of mine and is a sweet man. And Drev. One man I know is going to be an asset.
Tomorrow, I am told will be a long drive riding in the back of the Unimog. Should be exciting and the beginning of filming National Geographic’s ‘Mygrations’ following the migration of the Wildebeest across the plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania, Africa.
First entry into my diary that I carried with me on my trek through the African Serengeti in Tanzania whilst filming the National Geographic show ‘Mygrations’. This was a trek no one has done in over 50 years that meaning on foot and not on Safari vehicles where you can not leave the vehicle.
My entries in my book are short because I was only allowed 1 notepad.
Day One - Driving through amazing landscapes and very diverse. Our first part of the journey starts from Arusha having climbed into vehicles as groups. Before that I was weighed at 68kg. Driving through the city taking in as much as I could about the lifestyle and culture, I was already falling in love with it’s harshness and the simplicity of living and seeing happy people. Passing many tiny villages and landscapes that excited me to the core. Now driving into the Serengeti with my eyes wide open. I finally, once again, saw my sacred Baobab Tree in it’s glory of beauty and the true meaning of ‘The Tree of Life’. My heart leaped as I recognized it’s purity of symbolism. I remember visiting the Baobab tree when I was very young in my home land Australia. Much of this landscape reminded me of my home and the feeling all came rushing back to me with ease and quietness.
TBT to trekking the Serengeti & living WILD with @natgeochannel. We are stronger than we even fathom. Missing my #mygrations Animal House. 💋
Great event in VA. www.ImpactActual.com/Impact-Retreat
