I wad going through your translation tag and saw your post about Viki. I couldn't agree more!!! How can you as a company make a profit off of fansubbers????? (I mean Netflix hires mainly translation students/people w little translation experience and pays them dust but still). It hurts my soul, bc I studied translation and saw people's excitement about subs and dubs and comic book/manga translation and it just is so painful to know translation labor is not being paid :( glad to read your rant about it! This is also the reason I will never give viki my money 😒

Hi there! I'm … well, not glad it resonated with you. I wish I didn't have reason to post, wish that people had reason to call my concerns around this blown out of proportion and unreasonable. But I am glad you reached out – thank you! Fansubbing is a wonderful part of the fannish gift economy, and I am spitting mad that Rakuten Viki has had and continues to have the gall to exploit that. All we can do as translators is to continue fighting for fair working conditions and adequate wages, and that includes educating people looking into translation or folks new to the job about why it's important not to accept work that pays a pittance (or worse, unpaid work for the ~exposure) even and especially as a beginner.

Hi! I read your thoughts on candy color paradox and I agree. Something feels a bit off. I think, in its premise, it would be something I enjoy. Maybe it is because they talk about competence but we never actually see it? Also, I think it would have been a bit better had they gone with an acting style that is a mix of my beautiful man and old fashion cupcake. The characters are supposed to be at least in their mid twenties, no? I do love the way the drama is filmed, but something about it... also I read the manga out of curiosity and that one has a lot of smut and intimacy, which they seem to have replaced with the liking thing? (I could be remembering wrong, it is a few months ago that I read it).

I think @gillianthecat surmised that it was the relative inexperience of the actors holding back the performance. I think it's also the role of the job here. It's rare that I feel a Japanese production is trying to do too much, but I think the plot for this show is a bit bigger than its runtime. It feels like they are trying to build to some big statement about paparazzi culture, but it feels buried under the disconnect in their love languages.

Still, I like Kimura Keito's lips a lot.

Zu dem Internetanschluss: mir ist eine ähnliche Geschichte passiert. Als ich 2014 zum Studieren in meine WG zog, war das Internet von einem ausziehenden Mitbewohner gekündigt worden. Im ganzen Haus (3 WGs die alle die Bewohner gewechselt hatrwn) war die Situation die gleiche: kein Internet, und zwar einen Monat lang. Seeing S4 unfold in real time was a harrowing and all-consuming experience. I was writing my bachelor's thesis at the time and would just check the tag all day. The stakes were so high and a lot of people were disappointed. You are kind of lucky you never saw it live 💛

Yeah, that's how I feel too. I mean, even if part of me wishes that I had been part of that collective experience, watching SKAM after it ended has had enough impact on my daily life as it is 😆

I feel your tags on the queer post so much. I've never been very active in my own queer communities in Belgium(where I grew up) or Germany(where I studied) and I feel a total disconnect from it. Everything is so focused on America (literature, films, series, discourse) that I sometimes forget how it is where I'm actually living. I know nothing about the history. For the most part, I even lack the vocabulary in my languages except English to talk about these issues, which makes it harder to do...

Oh I feel you on that so much. I struggle a lot when talking about queer issues in Czech. And tbh even though I've been an activist for about 3 years now I'm still learning about what the lgbtq+ community is like in my country. Still learning the history of my own country but know all about the lgbtq+ history in America. 

what I would suggest is to try to follow some local organisations. I don't know what organisations exist in your country I only know people from the Wel Jong Niet Hetero but I'm sure there's plenty to choose from. In my country, we for example have a Centre for queer memory which focuses on my country's queer history. I'm sure you have something like that in your country as well. that is a good place to start so that you can learn about your own country's history. You don't have to get involved or be active but just follow them on Instagram or facebook or whatever you use and see what they're posting. I'm sure Belgium has a rich lgbtq+ history and we should know definitely know more about it. I know a bit more about the German lgbtq+ history since they're our neighbours and I'm sure they have plenty of resources as well. I'd say just start somewhere and follow a few organisations and see where to go from there. Also in terms of the literature, films and series? I promise you it is there. Not as much as the USA and maybe not as out as in the USA but it is there. It just takes a bit of searching (the only Belgium queer film I know is North Sea Texas but I'm sure there's more). Also not just in terms of lgbtq+ topics in general I'd suggest to start following more belgian/german organisations/people etc. and perhaps go through your follow list and maybe eliminate the number of Americans you follow. Like do you really need to follow all these American celebrities? Just try to bring more balance to it.
