This book is amazing and I cannot recommend it highly enough. A heartbreaking story of a stolen childhood. It's a great reflection on Lemn Sissay that he managed to not only survive such an unfair and brutal system but to go on to achieve what his talent deserves, but you should also be angry that he had to, and you have to wonder how many children have been left broken by the failings in the care system. How many ruined lives, how much wasted potential. It's also important to point out that, while he was failed by the system, the kindnesses shown by some stand out - the social worker who fought his corner and stressed that the rejection by his foster parents wasn't his fault; the teacher who recognised his talent for poetry and gave him a copy of The Mersey Sound; the woman from the National Association of Young People In Care who gave him a biography of Bob Marley. I love that each chapter starts with a poem.
