Myra Malik was born into a perfectly middle class family. Her father, Ashok had migrated to the United States of America from India when he was just 20 years old. He’d gone to work right away and started earning for the family he hoped to have. When enough funds were acquired, he made a trip back to India where he married his wife, Myra’s mother, Anita. He came back with her and they both began their journey on becoming American citizens. Anita became pregnant about six years later with twins, however one of the twins didn’t make it to term and so only Myra was born. She of course didn’t know any of this until she got a little older but throughout most of her childhood, she didn’t really notice anything being different as she was spoilt to the best of her parents ability. As she was their only child, both Ashok and Anita did whatever possible to keep their little girl happy and Myra was very happy through her childhood.
As she transitioned into junior high though, things started changing for her. She felt a bit more different than those around her and started using that frustration in different hobbies. She tried writing, painting, acting in drama club, dancing, anything that could perhaps fulfill that strange void she was beginning to feel creeping into herself constantly. When she met Asher though, that feeling subsided considerably. It had wonder if perhaps this was the missing piece, if this person was meant to be her person in every single way. The moment he proposed, she’d agreed and while her parents had warned her of this sudden marriage, even they couldn’t deny how much the two seemed to belong together.
Things had been good for a few years, of course with its share of ups and downs but for the most part, she was focusing on using one of her hobbies and turning it into a career. That was until she had been spotted out and about in Salem. It was a modelling agent and he’d decided she was perfect for some upcoming print ad. That had started the wheels turning in her mind. New York wasn’t too far, right? Except that it was. New York City was more than 4 hours away from Salem and while she could make excuses for a few weekends and days in between—in the long run she couldn’t commute.
That was when the realization of what she’d have to ultimately do came to her. She’d have to leave. She knew Asher wouldn’t move his life away from Salem and try as she might—he probably wouldn’t be coerced into it either and that left her with only one choice; leaving him. She hadn’t wanted to, and only she knows how many tears she shed when she made the ultimate move. She’d left him a note explaining what was going on and while she hadn’t left her number—he knew what it was and if he wanted to, he could’ve called her as well but she hadn’t received anything from him for the entire time she was gone.
When Myra moved to New York City, she’d faced her share of struggles as well but her luck was shining down on her as she managed to make it as a model. It started with print, ramp walks and commercials until finally she was a showstopper for a couple of designers.
Her reason for being back to Salem is clear and she’s here for one reason alone. She needs to renew her passport as she’s got plans to travel to Paris and Milan in the new two months. However her old passport had indicated her fully married name and now—she doesn’t know if its worth it to keep the same name that she’d changed as naive newly married woman.
However while Myra believes that to be the only reason, it’s not. Recently she’s realized that perhaps as a child she never really dealt with the passing of her twin and the hollow, unfulfilled feeling she has is because of that. Her therapist has suggested closure and she’s wondering if that should apply to each and every section of her life—including her estranged husband and that’s why she’s here to see if there’s anything worth salvaging or if handing him the divorce papers she’s come here with is the best idea.
