What Only I Can See

When we first met you seemed to be made completely of ice, your eyes reflecting the emptiness you felt in your soul.

The ice was your shield, a net of safety and protection. The ice in your heart helped you block out the past, but darling, I'm sorry to say, no matter how far you travel or how fast you can run, the past will always find a way back.

As our time together has progressed, I could see your defenses starting to crack, beneath all that cold, embers were glowing, a fire held inside was trying to burn.  

I hate to see you hurting and I wanted to warm your soul. I longed to sooth the numbness that had overtaken your heart. I wanted to see that flame burn and run wild, reaching for the potential I knew it contained. You shouldn't have to hurt yourself and deny who you are to become the hero you see in your dreams. It’s your power, not his, so darling won’t you please just stop holding it back. Let me lift away that weight from your shoulders and warm those ice chilled lips with the heat from mine. Let me take away all of your pain and replace it instead that small, shy smile of yours.

It took time for your shields to finally fall, those icy walls starting to shatter and crack when you chose to accept your past. I saw the real you start to peak through the cracks, the flame beneath glowing bright and beginning to melt away all that ice. For the first time, I could see the light in your beautiful heterochromatic gray and blue eyes.

Throughout our heroic journey at UA, you stuck by my side and we pushed one another to be the best "us" we could be.  We never gave up, not once did we let that bitter thought cross our minds, pushing forward until the very end.

Now, years past our graduation, we stand hand in hand, matching silver rings placed on our fingers, as we conquer the world together. Those around us only see us as a powerful hero duo, Deku and Shoto, the top two ranking heroes. They only see what we have achieved since going pro, but none of them can understand the struggles we faced and the mountains we climbed together that got us to where we are now.

The road to becoming pro heroes was far from easy but having you by my side made the journey worth absolutely worth all the pain. We don't care what other people think of us nor will we let anyone try to hold us back. We just keep our heads held high and continue moving forward the way we've always done.

The man who now stands tall beside me, saving the world with an open heart and open mind has come a long way from the cold, reserved boy that I met so long ago. I'm proud of who you've become and even prouder to call you my partner and husband. You have all of my heart now and forever and I will remain by your side until the very end of time.
