Dark Phase Space Spotlight On: MythMedia:21 | Sponsor

Mythmedia:21 is an art + design studio dedicated to collaborative projects that employ art, myth and media technologies to address 21st century concerns and cultural trends. MM:21 promotes artists and media-makers as messengers baring signs of the times with the potential to create pathways toward transformation and survival. Li Sumpter, MM:21’s Creative Director, is an interdisciplinary educator focused on using myth-based media and visual art to catalyze social change and paradigm shifts. While afrofuturism continues to be defined and re-defined by cultural trend and technology, Sumpter considers it, above all, an archetypal aesthetic through which we choose to perceive the world. As a mythic framework, afrofuturism serves the individual and the collective as a vehicle of pyscho-spiritual liberation enabling the de-construction of old dysfunctional realities and the creation of the new.

In her dissertation, Apocalyptic Soul: Seeing through Image in the Age of End Time, Sumpter examines the impact of apocalyptic art and media on psyche and the phenomenological world. She is currently developing a multi-media exhibition series to open in 2014 entitled Illuminated Artifax inspired by her doctoral research. Through her work and the art of her collaborators, this long-term curatorial project will bring emerging theories in aesthetics and media, the apocalyptic and the afrofuture into practice. Mythmedia Studios, home of the Escape Artist Initiative, is located in North Philly’s Window Factory Arts building, an emerging hub for practicing artists of multiple disciplines.
