The leader of a group.
Aah yes, the leader role question.
I think it should be a discussion between the company and the group itself. I do NOT think that the oldest should be the leader just because they are the oldest as a principle: Because while it might help with internal discussions within the group, because of the hyung- dongsaeng -thing and the youngsters kind of just having to go along with the elders, it could also instead create more friction tho, who knows, to each their own…
I do personally kind of like it when the group appoints their leader together, however one must remember that they need to be diplomatic not just with their members, but with the company as well so that could also backfire…
I don’t like it when they appoint the one they built the group around to automatically be the leader either, I’mma name names here because I have to ok! While I know No Mercy was technically a survival show, Shownu was Nr.1 first for no reason in my eyes, so he was the one they had pre-picked I guess, I’m speculating this anyway, (oh my gosh it was so long ago that I watched the show, I’m probably speaking out of my ass right now, I’m so sorry!) However, before I even knew the group, I was convinced he was not the leader and then when getting into them, I was shocked and almost angry because he is so not the leader type. At all! And I do pride myself at being moderately capable of reading ppl, despite my asd so... And he was even “exposed” on Ex-ray to have a very non-leader-capable-stress-sensitive type of personality and I was like THANK YOU, I KNOW RIGHT! Now, all of that said, he is clearly dealing with the whole thing fine, tho I was worried in the beginning but don’t care now: since they’re “making it”. Imo as long as he is happy and healthy: it ain’t anybody’s business.
Bottom line after this long semi rant is that: the leader needs to be able to be the leader before they are picked to be the leader!
Brokering piece within the group and conveying the wishes of the group to the company and orders from the company to the group, being the front and center during awards and interviews, and taking the lead during certain events and situations and in general being able to evenly distribute “screen time” and “shine time” to all members of the group are just some of the most prevalent things a leader might have to do after all. js
