Friendship

After a number of forgotten, misplaced, and failed friendships I have finally found the very small number of people I don’t want to forget, misplace, or fail. I say “forgotten” friendships because we all have that childhood best friend who we remember just enough, but not quite enough. I say “misplaced” friendships because much like our favourite toy this friendship was the one that slipped through our fingers. Obviously, when I speak about a “failed” relationship, I’m referring to the friendships that came to an end for an unpleasant reason.

Believe me when I say I have experienced all three of these. I remember Kathy from Kindergarten, but her name is all I really remember. That and that she had curly black hair and rode the bus. Kathy was cool because she rode the school bus. I won’t name my misplaced friendship because I truly am disappointed that I let that one slip through my fingers. We met in the 6th grade and lost touch after we went to different high schools. My failed friendship comes from the one friend I always saw myself talking to when we were sixty. We met in the third grade and come freshman year of high school, she gained a boyfriend and I lost a friend.

After 18 years of living on this earth I think I found my three. I never want to forget my relationship with the girl I met when I was five. We played jump rope the whole day, and the morning after I was knocking on her door. To this day we check in with one another and although we don’t do this as often as we could, we both know we’re just a call away. I never want to misplace my friendship with the annoyingly smart guy I met in 6th grade. We had four classes together for every single year of our middle school careers. He was the first person I shared my writing with because I knew he’d tell me if it sucked. He’s just honest to a default and I would never want to let someone so wonderfully genuine slip through my fingers. I would never want to fail the girl I met my senior year of high school and her first year in college. Never have I ever instantly clicked with someone the way I did with her. I genuinely hope that if our friendship ever comes to an end that it won’t be because we disappointed one another. She deserves a friend who she doesn’t think simply “tolerates” her and I’ll be that friend for as long as she desires.

Sadly, as a result of my years interacting with people I’m wise enough to know that I might not speak to any of these people in a couple of years. However, I find that if I reduce myself to thinking that this is the undeniable end result I’ll always be lonely. I struggle enough to open up to people without assuming that it’s all for nothing.

I did lie though. There’s one more friend. The only difference is that I truly hope I never forget, misplace, or fail that one girl I knew in middle school, but whom I never truly met until freshman year.
