Reflections - July 10th, 2022
A concept of bliss this white in a story all golden shine you thought to argue not a sweet surrendered word for such bliss to feel so vast, it held to white like cloud to a breath, yet so many other colours. "My gosh. I didn't mean it like that." She uttered, "Surely he knows, I'm to be gone by the sun's dawn." She said. The rabbit hopped down the stairs as fast as he could. The boy stood in the doorway, fastening his hat. The rabbit advanced until it stood at his feet. "Where is she?" He asked the rabbit. It did not reply. There he stood, until into our story, like falling from the sky itself, straight into our lovers arms, the girl was sure to come momentarily, so he waited. There was a long dull silence then he took but one step inside. His head darting side to side, "Darling. Where is my darling?"
Come on then. This is your doing." Said the girl angrily, walking through the green fields behind her house. "I swear, next time you won't be so lucky." She opened the fence and made her way back to the house. "Now I'm late, wish me luck." She said entering to see the boy standing at the door. "Brade my love." Said the girl.
"Lexy, I'm so sorry I'm late," he began to explain.
"Hush boy, hold a simple minute, I must change shoes, you can sit if you like." She motioned him towards the living room. "Minutes," she explained running up the stairs. Brade sat down on the cushions in the room and waited for Lexy. "Boy! You best whisper any thoughts away our Lexy is a sweetheart, I'll take my stick at you." The old lady sat pointing at him, leering each word with warning. Brade forced a smile and politely offered, "Grace for best a smile," he looked satisfied with himself, until Lexys grandmother burst out, "Heretic." "I'm sorry Brade. Mother stop!" Lexy said entering the room.
"That's your mother!?" Asked the boy.
"I just call her that." Lexy explained, "Hey Maxsy, you be quaint like we talked about okay, Brade is a nice boy, and you are very old."
Brade smiled politely again, and shrugged the tension out of his shoulders. "Come on B-Man, let's go." Lexy said, taking his hand and leading him out the door. "What's our first stop?" Brade asked Lexy.
She rolled her eyes slightly, "Shouldn't I be asking you that? You wanted time at my side, to your face, and I inclined sweet boy. Don't waste it. Tell me you have nothing planned."
"I thought," he started explaining. "This is no good. No good at all." Lexy continued. She turned to face him, walking backwards. "Well, Brade," she said accentuating his name, "wherever are you taking me?" She asked.
"Sunshine River." Said the boy as if coming up with the idea, "you ever been?"
"Have I been to Sunshine River? What, could not I be so wordly."
"No, sweet Lexy, it's just, the solex balloons, your parents and all."
"Well I have anyway, so the beach then?" Lexy said happily.
"The river." Brade corrected, "The river," He said twice.
They reached the line to the balloons and sparked conversation with a very nervous teddy bear about to make his first balloon ride home to see his long lost parents. An orphan bear, that suddenly found he had an entire family waiting for him four quadsects North. They thought he was dead, he thought they were, it turns out everyone was A okay. "Yeah, so it turns out everyone was A okay." Said the teddy bear. "That's great." Said Brade back. The balloon got bigger as it approached. "Next!" Yelled the elephant.
"Come on Lexy. This is where we get on." Said Brade proudly. "I know!" Said Lexy with a pout. She stepped forward behind the teddy bear. He took one failed half step onto the balloon, then yelped and fell back into Lexy. "I just don't like balloons!" He said accentuating the word balloons. It echoed down into the valley. "I just don't like balloons, balloons, balloons."
"Hurry up silly." Lexy put her arm into Brade's and they stepped onto the balloon. It held six Travlets, including the elephant flying it. He yelled out loudly, "Ignore my ears ladies and gentleman, they know to hear no space just brush past them. Take a seat or stand, a view awaits, each quadsect may take a few minutes extra as all drive parts repeated function, as we are Travlets we hold true the ways. Quadsect carry in load, hold on people!" And the elephant pulled on a rope with his trunk and like a magic carpet they swept through lands like spinning dice to a board game, then suddenly they were there.
Sunshine River. Whoa! I've never felt anything like that before!" Said Lexy out of breath.
Brade started his sentence, "But I thought," but then thought better, and smiled politely. "Sunshine River is great!" He said eagerly looking at the balloon gate to exit as if he planned on heading straight down the mountain to the river on first go. Yet in pray not to see himself a Sladarian. "I hope we don't see any sladarians." Lexy said quietly. Brade took her hand softly. "Don't worry Lexy. You're with me." He looked out determined at something far away in the sky. "That elephant." He said out loud
"Yes?" Said the elephant.
"Ah, nah, nothing." Said Brade. "Thanks for the ride."
"It's the ears isn't it?" Said the elephant clutching at each ear as if trying to fold them in on themselves.
Lexy and Brade departed the balloon while the elephant continued muttering to himself about his ears.
The teddy bear saluted them, "well folks, it was sure nice, I made it."
"I hope you like your family." Lexy said. "I'm sure it'll be okay. Once I spent three days in a closet just to steal some dust from a blood fairy, this'll be a cake walk through Caketown."
"Ah, cool. Um, hey, what's your name?" Asked Brade.
"Teddy." The bear smiled nervously, before looking off in the distance and into himself. "Teddy," he said again, before walking off towards the bus stop.
"I hope you like your family Teddy!" Lexy said again.
Brade jumped in the air and then started shadow boxin.
"Yeah Teddy. Hope you like your family."
"Come on. Let's go!" Said lexy taking his hand and running down towards the path to the river. They past a huge sign that said, 'Sunshine River.' There were animals and Travlets, and even the odd Sladarian. Lexy and Brade started racing. "I'll beat you!" He yelled but she was much too fast. "The beach!" Cried Lexy, laughing as she reached the sand to a river on a mountain in a land four quadsects North of Sully Station where Lexy and Brade called home.
"Timmy Dim Jetpack every dackle wonderous the wave! Kickle middle step right up, a pound for a shot at the title."
"A shot at the title" Brade said out loud. 'Title of what?' He wondered.
"What are you, and what of this title?" Brade asked boldly.
There stood a small green creature.
"My names Jack told a line, I make up riddles, and I have green skin, so im kinda hard to see sometimes."
"Who said that?" Brade exclaimed loudly.
"Try your luck, I'll give you a riddle."
"You didnt even say it cool." Brade replied.
"Boring!" Said Lexy. "Come on." Leading him by the hand away from the green creature.
"But he has the title." Brade said frustrated.
"Look at that!" Burst Lexy pointing. It was a dinosaur standing at the rivers edge.
"It eats lettuce I heard, stay back." Warned Brade shielding Lexy.
"That I've never seen before." She said with glowing eyes looking up, "introduce me."
"What?" Replied Brade.
"You said you've been here before."
"Yeah but that doesn't mean I know everyone."
"Ask him a question. See if he'll talk to us."
"He's a freaking dinosaur Lexy. Let's just stay away."
"Don't be green." Said Lexy, "it's boring. Hey! Big fella! Over here."
The dinosaur turned its enormous head and stare at the couple below him. With a quick swipe he could brush them into the rough green dirt and sand, but he thought three times about it and every time decided no.
"Leave me alone." Said the dinosaur bellowing out each word, "I'm a sad dinosaur."
"What's wrong?" Asked Lexy.
"Let's leave him alone Lexy. He's bringing down my vibes."
"I lost my friend." Said the dinosaur.
"Oh no!" Lexy replied, "Can we help you look for them?" She asked. "
"Ha!" Laughed the dinosaur in a big roar. "You? With your tiny little legs, show me where you'd look."
Lexy shrugged and pointed out across the river. The dinosaur looked, "Not there." He said both laughing and crying as he began to stomp away. "Jenny!" The dinosaur cried out loudly into the wind, then defeated, repeated, "I'm such a sad dinosaur." And stomped back through the treeline to disappear.
Brade laughed to himself, then looked at Lexy with his hallmark smile, "Hey Lexy, want to go swimming?"
"Trust I would none such ever let such be to be such any other way." And so the pair went off towards the raging waters of the rivers edge. There they stood, hand in hand, facing the water. "Let us waste not yet such even a minute." Said Lexy, taking off her top. Her wings popped out large and bold, wide and high above her, pure white. Brade followed her lead and pretty soon his wings flew out to meet and match his date. "Race you fly to the other side?" Yelled Lexy, flapping her wings wildly. Brade tried to catch up but she was off across the top of the water like a really hot dragonfly. Spinning and twirling over and into the water, just to spiral back out again like a dolphin jumping into wings of white flight. "Wait up!" Cried Brade trying to keep up.
They raced three kilometres to the other side of the river and such amazement they would feast their eyes on. A giant love stork at Sunshine River was quite the sight to see. It stood drinking from the rivers edge, angrily stomping on small birds under its giant feet. Then in place of each loud squawk the stork would laugh and look at its bundle, a crazy sight to see. The storks eyes met Brade and Lexy as if caught in the act.
"It's a harsh world." Spoke the stork, "It's not the squawks! They have to learn." Said the giant bird.
"It's fine, said Lexy. "We're off duty anyway." She smiled, as the stork immediately got spooked and began flapping its wings to take off.
"Nark!" Yelled the bird in a panic. It flew fast and wild away from Brade and Lexy. They watched him continuously look back at them at he flew with his stick and bundle off into the distance.
"I bet that was Gary." Said Lexy.
"I'd say so." Replied Brade.
"The only one they haven't caught." They said in unison.
"You think he'll make it past the border this time?" Brade asked. They looked at eachother a moment, then Lexy replied starkly, "If he does it's another culling season next year, that's for certain.""
"It's like throwing newspapers down the drain." Brade added, shaking his head.
"I know right, a darn sight cause for a tradegy amiss if I've ever seen one."
The two sat down at the rivers edge.
"And you just know those first few chirps are a dead give away. What a waste." Brade said sadly.
"I'll send a light whisper when we get back." Said Lexy. "Today is our day, fine in the sunshine," she added smiling.
Today, our pair of winged love birds weren't partners. Today, they were just a boy and a girl on their first date. "Come on Brade, let's walk along the river." Lexy said happily.
"Sure." Brade replied, "Sure Lexy."
So there they walked and walked they then continued walking down the rivers edge far from all but eachother, hand in hand. "Well is quite lovely." Lexy said looking up
"Yeah." Brade said back, "Lovely is a kiss, oh sweet my dearest have we ever waited?" He asked as though a question.
Lexy looked back down towards the river raging water down its sunshine, and looked at Brade deep in the eyes.
"Keep waiting." She said casually.
"Oh look, a mushroom." She exclaimed.
Brade looked disappointed, and he watched as she picked it. She looked at him with a devilish smile and threw the mushroom into her mouth.
"I loove these." She said with a mouthful of mushrooms.
It didn't take long before the river got louder and more ferocious as they made their way towards the waterfall.
"Why is it so loud?" Lexy said in awe, staring at the river.
"You think I could jump off the waterfall Lexy? I saw a guy do it once."
There was silence, then Lexy spoke back, "You have wings silly."
"Yeah, but if I didn't use them." He responded.
Lexy shrugged, "I don't know." She said pondering the thought.
"Here it is!" Cried Brade, running to the waterfalls edge and looking over.
"I'm going to do it." He said proudly.
"Watch this." He ran towards the waterfalls edge and did a front flip leading into his leap off the edge. Lexy watched as he flew himself out into the air, wings combed back folded in to help the fall. "Forever!" He yelled out into the air as he fell towards the water below. Such a sight seen, Lexy marvelled clapping alone on top of the waterfall.
"Yay! That was great." She said as if he could hear it.
"He kept falling. Down towards the water. It was higher than he had imagined and he started to freak out. He gave in and raised his wings, streaking pretty through the sky and soaring back to Lexy up above. "You're not wet." Said Lexy.
"I dry fast." Said Brade, avoiding eye contact.
"What should we do now?" Brade asked.
Another question, if asked to know, yet do you know?" She asked him.
Brade realised this was a test. He liked tests. He was good at them.
"I know what we should do. We should hunt for the red berries. Use them as bait."
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Replied Lexy.
"I think I could eat five or six right now." Said Brade. "They'll start at the bottom of the waterfall."
And so they went, trekking down to the base of the waterfall. Bright patches of red wildberries sparked up from the ground all around. They picked as many as they could and then quietly crept out from the rivers edge further and further and further they went.
"Something has to happen soon." Lexy whispered, holding Brades shoulder. They peered out into the clearing where they laid their trap. Thousands of squirrels came running through the field like a herd of dinosaurs currently hiding Tommy's ex girlfriend Jenny. They started to swarm for the berries and the two of them just waited and watched.
"When the first squirrel touched the first berries the first trap hit the first squirrel down into the last dirt it would know to touch. The next few went just as quick, and before long the other squirrels were running around confused. Seeing many scatter from the berries while they went in themselves, they didn't know what to do. Before long they had scattered and Lexy and Brade went to check their score. The had hunted seven. They started a fire and began to cook them.
"I saw your rabbit today. He didn't say anything to me."
"He was probably jealous. Don't worry about it."
"He has an attitude problem." Brade said angrily.
"It's kind of a pity squirrels can't talk, you know?" Said Lexy.
Brade looked up chewing the squirrel.
"I don't think they want to talk." Said Brade, "probably for the best."
"Quite strange if you ask me." Said Lexy, looking around as the light began to leave the valley.
"My gosh, focus for Sunshine sake. Not over there. Over here." Said Lexy to Brade, as she pointed towards Caketown, now visible in the distance.
"I think I want cake." She said.
"Me too." He said back.
"Should we fly?" She asked him.
"Yeah." He returned.
And off they flew to Caketown.
The bustling streets sent Travlets in every direction, some with big hats on, some with normal hats. Lexy hailed a bright blue taxi, "Take me to cake." She said jokingly.
"Two tickets, to cake." Said Brade to the driver. He nodded and stroked his moustache. "That way!" He said loudly, pointing as he drove. They took off down the street towards one of Caketowns many cake houses. And pretty soon they'd be eating cake.
"Look Lexy," Brade said pointing, "it's not even raining."
"Oh my oh my, why would she, would she? You think she would?" Lexy asked amused.
"Then the lady did just as expected and twirled her umbrella up and over the sky. "My gosh, such a dove for the sky, what excitement." A word much the magic sent their awe to follow.
"What a strange turn of events." Said Brade.
"I've heard about her, she's a genius they say." Lexy looked to the sky and spoke softly in wonder, "It's not even raining."
"My umbrella has a hole in it." Brade replied as they made their way inside.
"Menu. Menu. Menu. How many of you." Said the ostrich at the table.
"Just two, thank you." Said Brade licking his lips. "I've always wondered, do you have anything other than cake here?"
The ostrich stare blindly out the window for a moment then replied, "Coke."
"I'll have cake and a coke then." Said Lexy. "Thank you ostrich."
"I'll have the same, so make it two emu." Noone looked impressed at Brades terrible joke but he didn't care.
They sat and they ate all kinds of different cake. Some were chocolate, some assorted glows of rainbow mixtures, some with cream around the edges, and they really liked them, and didn't want to leave. The coke was a little too sweet just the same, but in Caketown they had a saying, if the cokes too sweet, you didn't drink it right. So they drank it anyway, and talked the day away. But things were about to get messy in Caketown.
One block away snipers were getting into place. Marking up a battleground worse than the Caketown riots. Brade and Lexy were about to be caught in the crossfire of a robbery gone wrong. Four pink bears held hostages across the street and our couple were about to go from their first date to their first ransom negotiation, all in the time it took them to notice.
"What a day, a lovely day in harvest, cake and a dream with you Lexy for a kiss?" Brade tried again leaning into Lexy. She arched back with time to spare, amused she pondered a moment longer, "Maybe such a fant I see to see so clear in your eyes, like taste your cake, I ponder still."
"My gosh." Said Brade embarrassed.
Then the doors burst open, and four pink bears jumped out of the shop across the street, hostages in hand. Each held their candy cane weapon. A chiselled candy sword the worst of it, they looked over at the couple. "Hey you! Come here!"
"Oh no, oh most definitely no." Replied Lexy, "don't listen to him Brade."
Brade had already started walking over to them but stopped himself.
"They have hostages," she cried out, "somebody help!"
Brade stood firm trying not to act scared.
Just then the first bullet flew through the air and popped the bears pink skin. He began flapping wildly through the air as he started to deflate. He landed near the sniper that took the shot, but there were still three pink bears left and time was running out. The hostage ran to safety. He was the only one that made it out. Upstairs they'd find an old mouse tied to a chair, tied to explosives set to explode if he moved. Time was running out.
You!" Said the pink bear at Brade. "Spare a wing?"
Brade looked at Lexy then back at the bears. "It's too cold to take them off! And it's too hot to say yes!" He yelled boldly, "As for the rest of you, I don't care if you're perfect, not today, not on my wings." He continued.
"Don't encourage them." Cried Lexy, "maybe we should run."
Brade looked at her then up at the sky.
"Why run, when you can fly!" He yelled, then kicked into the air towards the bears. "I'm a seventh star!" He cried, bursting into the first bear with a cracking thud.
"Oh no," cried Lexy, "not again!"
She ran to help Brade but before she could, the sniper took another shot. The girl was innocently walking down the street, unaware and unbeknownst, she took each step so lightly beating to the music in her mind. Then POW, it hit, and off went her pretty little hat. The sniper missed, but when he shot, the casing landed hot over the buildings edge, and onto some newspaper, who could have seen. The cake house went up in flames and the girl across the street ran home.
Everyone was safe. Except for Brade and Lexy, the hostages, the sniper, and the three pink bears.
The standoff went for hours. But eventually, once the sniper got down from the roof, they all agreed to keep one hostage each. So away they went. Each bear with a hostage, the sniper with a hostage, and now Brade and Lexy had two new friends.
I've never been a hostage before." Said the hostage.
"You'll get used to it." Said Lexy, spitting out a piece of squirrel.
"You got names?" She asked.
"I'm Penny, and thats Sharon." Said Penny, "she doesn't talk much."
"I wouldn't imagine hostages do." Brade said as they walked the banks of Sunshine River, back towards the balloons and Sully Station
"Either of you got a problem with rabbits?" Lexy asked.
"Rabbits? Well, no, of course not." Said Penny the hostage.
"Good." Said Lexy before turning to Brade, "Can I keep them both?"
"Sure." Said Brade, "I've got plenty at home." He said, "I want you to have them too."
"Oh thank you Brade, what a day!" She exclaimed. And the four of them made their way up the path. Then onto the balloon, and four quadsects South, they soon found themselves back at Sully Station.
"A kiss on a doorstep in place of my heart in its seems yet to burst like I came for the scene, my love."
"Oh, sweet a word, my love, but for Penny, I wouldn't want her to see."
"But you just met her." Brade said angstily. "For in a doorway crest a mistletoe I bind to the thought, quell my night unrest, a kiss at best, my cake my love trust anywhere." He began murmuring nonsense to himself as they stood awkwardly at the door.
"This I must tell you Brade." Said Lexy a little coy. "I'm to be gone by the sun's dawn."
"Gosh darn it!" Cried Brade, "Where!?" He demanded.
"I must go. Such sweet a loss to think I must go." She replied softly.
"But where? And why, my love, what do you speak of?"
"Such a sadness in my troubles gone, to part such ways without a kiss, my dearest Brade."
"Yes my love, I agree."
"But oh so sweet a loss it takes, to wait again, like nothing claimed."
"Fucking riddles." Cried out Brade as he threw one wing on the ground.
"So sweet tomorrow comes," she continued murming nonsense quietly as she closed the door ushering the hostages in awkwardly. "Bye Brade." She said as the door clicked closed.
He stood there a moment, in such loss of bliss like grey on black. Then bending down he picked up a rock and looked back at her house. He almost threw it, but then he stopped himself, "Why run, when you can fly?" He said to himself, and up he went right through the top right window, crashing into her bedroom.
Lexy heard the loud bang, but she was already our the back door.
"I told you." She said, "He was never going to stop."
She looked back up at the house, then out to the field from wence she came. "Come on. Let's go Stak." Said Lexy. And the two of them left Sully Station, and never went back.
