he scrapes at his front tooth with his index finger. there’s an open door in the room and he could never focus with those around. there are too many possibilities behind them. closed doors are different, closed doors are more binary. or just binary enough to set him at ease. david continues to scratch at his tooth as if it was itching. he digs deeper into his own mouth, follows the ridges of his gums, smoothes them out with a finger, goes far enough to touch the decaying wisdom tooth.

david blinks and forcefully drags his hand away from his face. “sorry, you were, um, saying?” oisín’s words reach him just a second after he asked for clarification. david clears his throat like a very normal person who was paying attention. “my, uh, dad sent you?? how, how is he?”

     “ –– Alright. “      To call this a dream job would be an understatement. His passion and education had all led up to this point, leading a medical revolution in the field of mutations, though not as it has been done before: person-first research is his game, never one to pry and experiment for the sake of simple information. Silas wants to make a difference.      He takes a seat near Nemo wit clipboard in hand, pen ready for notes.

     “I’ve got a basic understanding of your mutation on paper, but I’d like to hear a little more about it from you.”

‘ i’m not being cruel on purpose, ’ even though he is both comfortable and capable of behaving that way, ‘ i’m just trying to provide a critical eye to your operation here.  the world needs a lot of saving these days. your kids may not want to do the dirty work, but they might just have to.’ with two apocalypses under his belt, he feels expertly qualified to be handing out free advice, and believe it or not- he’s only taking it upon himself because he cares. since compassion is very new to five, tact will have to come later (if at all).

he doesn’t sit down next to johnny, he paces in front of him instead, like a repetitive one-man parade. an object in motion stays in motion, a hummingbird dies if it stops flapping its wings, five's body burns anxious energy as fuel, such and such and so on. ‘ i never attended a prom, did you? did it make you a better person? ’

“ neev! i’m so happy you made it - it’s nice to see you. ” a little awkward, still, sure - but charles is accustomed to making do with awkward. “ i was so glad you called. how are things? ” he’s already downed a mimosa or two just to take the edge off of the situation. charles still feels bad for everything that happened - he’d never meant to make neev feel unwelcome at the school, but - well, hindsight is twenty-twenty, so the saying goes. he’s happy to see that the other has bounced back so easily. “ tell me - how are you finding your new position? ”

Most kids sneak out of school. Out of their own school. Kidd is doing double the opposite. Sneaking into some other school. Which maybe, in fact, if you think about it, makes this kind of cool and not just twice the nerdy. He’s straddling a second story window sill like he’s mounted a horse. There’s a big bush below that he really doesn’t want to fall into. Mostly because he saw some student hide stuff in it and that stuff may have been drugs? He’s about to go for the dismount into the room when he sees someone standing there. His body does that weird flailing flinch bodies do when you get surprise scared. Panicked:

          “I’m allergic to doors!”

Why did he say that. That’s stupid. Metal. Oh my god, he could have said metal. Like, metal doorknobs, right. That’s a thing. He could still fall into the drug bush. It may be less painful than this.
