May I ask why in the sentence “私は、日本語を話したかったのですが、英語を話してしまいました” you put のです? I understand 私は、日本語を話してたかった and the が after のです (is use to say “but”) but I can look up why you place のです(is event?)

～のです is ～んです (～んです being the shortened form). ～んです tacks onto an adjective, noun, or the short form of a verb. One of it’s meanings is giving an explanation or a reason for something or emphasizing the meaning of the sentence. You’re explaining your situation, so to speak. When used in a question like どうしたの or どうしたんですか (What happened? What’s going on?), it’s like fishing for answers or looking for an explanation. ～んです is more conversational, though.

Kanji: メアリーさんがどうして授業に来なかったのか分かりますか。 Kana: メアリーさんがどうしてじゅぎょうにこなかったのかわかりますか。 Romaji: Mearii-san ga doushite jugyou ni konakatta no wakarimasu ka. English: Do you know why Mary didn’t come to class? (It’s unusual; I really wanna know).

Kanji: 車が壊れたのです。or 車が壊れたんです。 Kana: くるまがこわれたのです。 Romaji: Kuruma ga kowareta no desu. English: Her car broke down (That’s why).

Kanji: 今、何をしているんですか。 Kana: いま、なにをしているんですか。 Romaji: Ima, nani wo shite irun desu ka.  English: What are you doing now?

Kanji: レポートを書いているんです。 Kana: レポートをかいているんです。 Romaji: Repooto wo kaite irun desu. English: I’m writing a paper.

My situation that night was, “I really wanted to speak Japanese, (and really there’s no excuse for not speaking it), and I ended up speaking English (much to horror and disappointment).”
