      Fingers that were cool to the touch traced just below Jesse’s collarbone, in the divot of soft flesh between shoulder and ribs. The touch was careful and barely there, as though pressing into the deep scars left from bullet wounds would reopen them. They were new, but the skin had long pulled itself back together- the scars were in danger of nothing aside aching. Plenty of Jesse ached already. And so he watched movements with an expression that gave away nothing, and didn’t dare to move to prop himself up upright among pillows for fear that it’d scare the touch away. Jesse couldn’t bring himself to reply- not yet. He wasn’t sure how to.

     Brown eyes shifted from hand to unmasked face, and drunk in Genji’s expression (a habit he got into whenever he experienced the privilege of these moments, where the other man’s trust was placed in him). The other was trying to mask expression as much as Jesse was, remain neutral despite his words, that much was obvious, but Jesse knew what to pick up on. The slight crinkle in Genji’s brow and tug at his lips- the beginnings of a frown. Worried as much as it was guilty. The feeling was unfounded. Scars happened. Jesse did not blame him. There was nothing to blame him for.

      Jesse knew the reasoning behind the statement perfectly well. The memory was still fresh- it was chaos, yes, but Jesse was woefully aware that the other had disappeared from his side in a fight. Unintentional- he’d known that even then. Missteps, openings, they happened, and when they did they were taken advantage of. Separation was inevitable at some point or another. Jesse’s own visual search for the Cyborg- an attempt to make sure he was still standing- was a distraction at the expense of taking a shot to the shoulder.

     A sigh parted Jesse’s lips, and he lifted his hand from where it rested on his stomach, reaching to touch Genji’s face. He lightly pressed his calloused palm against the scarred flesh of the cyborg’s cheek, thumb tracing the line of the smaller man’s cheekbone. He felt the other tilt his head slightly into the gesture, before he removed his hand once more, bringing it towards his shoulder instead. He slid his hand, open palmed, over the top of Genji’s still delicately positioned over fresh scars, and closed his fingers around it, gentle and a gesture of comfort. There was another quiet pause that lasted a moment before Jesse brought his arm down, pulling Genji’s with it, away from the scars, resting both of their hands on the middle of his chest instead. Jesse deemed it safely away from the place of continued worry, and it appeared to have worked, enough so that Genji’s gaze itself had left the old wound, attention caught to where both of their touch was now re-positioned. Then his eyes lifted, making eye contact which Jesse held.

       “You know,” Jesse started, wetting his lips as he did a final mulling over of words. He felt his expression soften, and did not bother to hold it, “Reckon I got plenty more scars I need to get before we’re even enough that yer allowed to start fussin’ over them.”

      Jesse tilted his head back further into the pillows, wiggling in his spot as though he was trying to find a position more comfortable (he was already plenty), “Line of work leads to scars, Genji. Mistakes. This one ain’t yours.”
