Probably the most perfect #menswear photo ever. Varsity Jacket, B15 Jacket, A2 Jacket, Type 2 Denim Jkt, N-1 Jacket, Shearling Jacket, Buffalo Check, Denim, selvedge
Got this unbelievable jacket from an Ebayer in Russia. Thought it was never gonna arrive. It took seven weeks to get to me but when it arrived I was astonished. Its the best construction Iv'e seen on such a jacket. The sheepskin is so thick and the styling is classic N-1deck jacket now (after modifications). Buzz Rickson , Pike Brothers, et al dream of this kinda quality. I was out on the wee BSA at minus 2 degrees and couldn't believe what was goin' on. There was no question of being cold but I didnt expect to actually feel the most pleasing warmth within the fleece of the wool. Just amazing. The height and cut of the collar is outstanding too. The seller did say it was good for down to minus 40 but I laughed at that. Now I'm certain it's the tool for those conditions.
I gambled on the size thinking that if the shearling was very thick then it might fit. If I'm honest my hopes were fake and kinda knew it might be too big and it was certainly at least two sizes large. So........as it had two piece construction with the fleece being an inner jacket , I could get good access to the outer shell to tailor it down to my size. I took 2 inches off the sleeves , re-cut 2 inches out of the shoulder seams and cut 4 inches off the bottom to try and get a more 'bomber' look goin' down. I wasn't too keen on the belted waistband so it was great that it came away with the shortening process but as you'll see in pic 4. I re-cut it and produced the belt detail on the back. The whole job took around 7-8 hours but I'm overjoyed with the result. As usual I was too focused on getting it done and forgot to shoot the jacket before I started but managed to find the bottom 3 shots from the Ebay listing. Notice in the last shot , the way that the jackets are held together. Very clever. Have to say , I'm pretty tempted to stencil something nice on the back but gonna wear it this winter and see.
So proud of my old Singer lock stitcher for munching through the many layers of ventile canvas and laughing it's way through the super-thick fur.
Iv'e been on the lookout for an N-1 for a long time but this thing kicks them in the nuts. N-1 prices have soared to ridiculous amounts recently too so won't be searchin' no more. And I might now attempt to re-size the 1940s Swedish M109 Field Coat I got a while back. It's construction is different though in that the shearling does not separate from the outer jacket making it very difficult to feed through the machine foot.
What about this Mr. Cabourn ;)
Seller wrote: it's hand marked "U.S. NAVY" at back, and underneath, sports a well executed hand painted cartoon scene depicting a long, lean Uncle Sam dressed in US Navy blues picking an annoying dart from his US Navy white "dixie cup" hat, and getting ready to administer a sound thrashing to the upstart U-Boat pest.
