in   his   hand,   a   photo,   a   couple   of   them   really,   all   of   the   same   subject.   him   and   kumiko,   in   okinawa,   a   few   unsend   letters.   perhaps   he   cannot   hide   it,   the   way   he   smiles   when   he   remembers   her,   or   the   way   his   eyes   long   for   what   never   was.   they   often   say,   wrong   place   right   person   and   maybe   that   applies   here,   except,   for   daniel   kumiko   had   always   been   right   and   yet,   life   didn't   work   like   that.   "i   don't   know.   .   .maybe   we   missed   our   window.   i   can't   ask   her   to   drop   everything   and   come   here   at   my   whim."

" what the fu--- " he braces his arms against the wall behind her, the rest of his body pressing against november's. he doesn't register it at first; the urgent hand at the small of his back, her breath against his neck, her hair tickling his chin. instead, eddie's listening for the pounding footsteps of any pursuers and trying to get his breath regulated. ( maybe he should quit smoking. cigarettes, at least. )

when eddie does finally realise the position they're in, their eyes meet as he glances downwards. he has no idea whether he's imagining the tension or if it's just a byproduct of the anxiety accompanying the mission, but he's growing very aware of just how close he and november are.

careful not to make anymore noise, he pushes off the wall behind her and leans back. the space not quite wide enough to move away from her completely, but just so he's not pressing against her anymore.

she’s  been  behind  the  wheel  plenty  of  times.  not  legally,  but  at  least  she  gets  the  gist  of  how  the  brake  and  the  gas  work,  and  that  when  it’s  in  neutral  or  park  then  the  car  won’t  necessarily  go.  you  know,  all  the  important  shit.  but,  it  sure  doesn’t  feel  like  it  when  her  foot  slams  down  on  the  gas,  sending  them  into  an  abrupt  level  of  speed  that  only  slows  down   when  her  heartbeat  somewhat  matches  up  with  her  breathing.  

still,   it’s  exhilarating.  thank  goodness,  she’s  grown  those  last  few  inches  this  summer;   eyes  reaching  over  the  steering  wheel  and  not  having  to  press  her  chest  against  it  just  to  reach  the  pedals.  

“   to  answer  your  questions,   yeah.   i’m  old  enough... well,  almost.  but,  i  just  saved  your  ass,  so  does  it  really  matter ?  ”   she  smirks,  peering   over  at  the  older  girl  sitting  in  her  passenger  seat.   “  old  enough  to  know  how  to  hotwire  a  car  is  old  enough  to  drive.   and,   as  for  madonna----   my  mom  and  i  used  to  dance  to  like  a  prayer  all  the  time.  i  think   this  car  has  an  aux  if  you  wanna  hook  it   up.   ”
