White-dotted Prominent Moth Nadata gibbosa
Found this prominent man at Lowe’s.
White-dotted Prominent (Nadata gibbosa), Fishers Island, NY. August 2017.
Adult picture is from June 2017. White-dotted prominent caterpillars feed on a variety of trees, including alder, birch, cherry, chestnut, maple, rose, and willow, although in the Mid-Atlantic, they show a preference for oaks. This caterpillar was collected from a red oak tree. When threatened, they tend to curl up like a snake and present their yellow jaws (mandibles), and they can pinch. Two generations in the Mid-Atlantic. Moths in late spring into June, and caterpillars throughout the summer and into fall. Overwinters as pupa.

This White-dotted Prominent caterpillar (Nadata gibbosa) blended right in to the oak leaf it was eating.
Wow, looks like you guys *really* like moths :-). So here's a moth for tonight, and I'll get to most of the others over the next week. Except I don't have any hellgrammites, unfortunately. And coleopteragirl, I photographed a Blattid just for you last week, I'm gonna have to be in the right mood to post it though ;-).
Found this white-dotted prominent moth (Nadata gibbosa) tucked into the grass near my moth light last week. Enjoy!
