Snow?

Herakles honestly had no idea what had been going through his mind when he’d agreed to visit Russia. Having been seated in his home at the time, his cat Antiochus seated on his lap, he hadn’t been capable of imagining the cold that now invaded his bones. Hell, there was snow everywhere. Homesickness plagued the poor Grecian, his heart longing for his considerably warmer country. The weight of the numerous jackets he wore was almost overbearing, though nothing that he couldn’t handle. Still, the multitude of layers made Herakles feel like he was suffocating, and he couldn’t wait to get inside and take (almost) all of them off. If it weren’t for the bulky scarf wrapped up around his face, the chattering of his teeth would be visible to anyone. Admittedly he had only been outside for a minute or two, but that didn’t stop him from contemplating which was preferable: this god-forsaken cold, or hell. Herakles hoped and prayed that Ilya would come and pick him up quickly, fumbling with his mittens while rocking back and forth on the sidewalk. How on earth did he endure this year after year?

"Don’t worry, c’est pas grave.” Justine assured Ivan. The large crystals of an opulent vase that shattered moments ago were scattered on the floor beneath their feet. It glistened under the sun, striking a mix between beauty and sadness... As Justine poetically saw it, anyway. 

Justine motioned for Ivan to take a seat on the living room couch, and walked out of the room for just a moment. She returned with a broom, seemingly unbothered as she begin to sweep the crystal cluster into a dustpan. “It was only a little trinket from the 16th century,” Justine said before meeting Ivan’s eyes to check for a reaction. With a wink, she clarified, “Non, I’m just kidding. It was a replica, but only we can know that.”

God okay it’s no secret Roderich is really not a fan of Russia. They’ve allied a couple of times but always out of pragmatism and for most of the 19th century, Russia was a giant thorn in Roderich’s side. While they were only at outright war a couple of times, Austria generally maintained a position of hostile neutrality towards Russia– i.e., we’re not going to declare war or anything but we’re watching you motherfuckers. Russia tended to pursue a very pro-Slavic agenda, which mean that they usually would actively support the independence movements of Slavic territories. The Eastern Front of WWI was long, arduous, and bloody, with most of Austria-Hungary’s casualties coming from the Russians. Roderich can hold a grudge like no other and he doesn’t trust Ivan as far as he can throw him. 

That being said, I think they could easily find some common ground in modern day. Roderich is an artsy guy and he does genuinely respect Russia’s literary tradition. He and Ivan could have same great philosophical debates together...if only Roderich weren’t Such A Bitch.
