Malaysia's cocoa industry has grown rapidly over past 10 years
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27, 2014:Malaysia is set to benefit from the growing cocoa industry with increase in cocoa demand, according to a forecast by the International Cocoa Organisation (ICCO).ICCO predicts that cocoa demand will increase by 2.7% between 2012 and 2013, and 2013 and 2014.
This bodes well for cocoa-based industries, said Datuk M. Nagarajan, who is deputy secretary-general for the Plantation Industry and Commodities Ministry.“In fact, Malaysian cocoa industries in the downstream stage have been growing rapidly in the last 10 years.“Malaysia is currently among the largest cocoa grinders in the world, after the Netherlands, Cote d’Ivoire, United States and Germany.”
Nagarajan said this at the launch of the 4th Malaysia Cocoa & Chocolate Day (MCCD) 2014, held at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre, in conjunction with World Cocoa Day.Themed “Cocoa for Fun and Health”, the two-day event focused on promoting health benefits of cocoa consumption to the public.Nagarajan said local cocoa grindings industry had produced 285,608 tonnes of cocoa in the form of liquefied cocoa, cocoa butter and solid cocoa press cake for export and domestic use. This represented a two-fold increase compared to 2000, with Malaysian cocoa products being exported to more than 80 countries.Nagarajan added that local cocoa consumption was still low at 0.5kg per capita compared to 3.5kg in developed countries, which meantthat there was much room for growth in local consumption.
He said the government was strengthening the cocoa industry by encouraging R&D for technology development for cocoa-based products, such as heat resistant chocolate, compact make-up products, cocoa bean pulp juice and pharmaceutical products.“The government will assist local entrepreneurs by marketing their products to the world market.
“The Malaysian Cocoa Board (LKM) will continue efforts to increase not only productivity, but also the efficiency and quality in cocoa cultivation.“This includes incentives for smallholders to ensure sufficient yield to meet the local industry’s grinding needs. “Local industry players are also given assistance in the form of training and grinding equipment to increase productivity.“Entrepreneurs under LKM produced RM11.9 million worth of cocoa products in 2013, with some producing more than 800kg of chocolate blocks a month.”
