13 killed as train derails in India
At least 12 people were killed and 30 injured when a passenger train derailed on Konkan Railway route in Maharashtra’s Raigad district today.
The accident occurred just outside a tunnel near Nidi village, when the engine and four out of 20 bogies of Diwa-Sawantwadi passenger train derailed around 10am.
The incident happened between Nagothane and Roha railway stations, about 120km from Mumbai, the online news portal of Hindustan Times reported
Police said rescue operations were ongoing, adding that workers were trying to extricate people trapped under bogies that had overturned.
According to the latest police report, 13 passengers were killed and 30 injured in the mishap. However, a railway spokesperson put the death toll at 9.
Authorities said 11 bodies have been sent to the primary health centre in Nagothane for a post-mortem. The bodies have yet to be identified, police said, adding that the injured passengers had been taken to Roha for medical treatment.
The railway authorities have suspended its services on the Konkan railway route following the mishap.
Last month, a goods trainalso derailed on the route, affecting services.
The online report said the Railways Ministry had ordered an inquiry and its Minister Mallikarjun Kharge announced an ex-gratia of Rs200,000 (RM10,850) for those killed in the accident, Rs50,000 for the grievously hurt and Rs10,000 for passengers who suffered minor injuries.
Railway Board chairman Arunendra Kumar said Commissioner of Railway Safety Chetan Bakshi would conduct the inquiry and had rushed to the site.
