The rose hips of the beach rose, which is what you see in the pictures, are edible and can be made into jams and jellies or eaten raw. I had never tried one before. They taste sort of like a tomato, but firmer and a little sweeter.

Shadow Spreading - The afternoon light of winter leaves long shadows to streak and trail behind even small shells on the sandy surface.
Echoes - We couldn't help but notice the ripples and ridges left behind in the stiff sand by an unseen wind, blowing and freezing. On and on, from the surf to the dunes and seeming unbreakably strong until broken by lonely footprints.
A Cold Blue - The beach in winter is something else. Looking at it seems similar, but the cold drains away even the warmth of the sun. It's a weak light over cool shells and vague sandy footprints, where only the frigid gulls keep watch.

An afternoon of paddle-boarding almost turned into a nightmare for a woman who ventured into the waters off Nahant Beach [Massachusetts] on Monday and discovered that she couldn’t get back to shore. “The wind blew her way off the beach,” said Swampscott Police Sergeant Bill Waters.
Luckily, the woman was wearing an Apple Watch and she was able to call 911…
