Pink Sand Verbena (Abronia umbellat) 🌸
Beach Rose July 28, 2024 Nahant Beach Nahant, Massachusetts
The rose hips of the beach rose, which is what you see in the pictures, are edible and can be made into jams and jellies or eaten raw. I had never tried one before. They taste sort of like a tomato, but firmer and a little sweeter.

Solanum dulcamara (Bittersweet)
Another tough-as-nails ‘weed’, Bittersweet is a member of the Solanum genus which also contains potatoes, tomatoes and eggplants. Come to think of it, if you were to paint bittersweet’s petals yellow, they would look just like tomato flowers.
Florida 2016
if you visit the beaches of maryland and delaware, the last thing you might expect to see is sprawling clumps of cacti along dunes and beach house lawns. opuntia humifusa- or eastern prickly pear- is a hardy cactus that actually is seen as far north as massachusetts. they blend in surprisingly well with the beach grasses and shrubs, but you can easily spot their bright yellow blooms starting in late spring. the undeveloped fruits in the pics above will turn bright red in a few weeks, and you can eat them if you’re careful not to get stuck with the glochids(tiny spines)!
