The General consensus of athletes says It’s always better to work out with a partner than alone—hence why Annie decided to bring Eren along with her to the new gym that opened up two weeks ago.  

It was a small compact building, and since it was brand new, not lot of people came by it, which meant more weights and machines were available, and the showers weren't all taken. A good find for Annie, it was only a car ride away from her home too.  

She entered the gym, Eren in tow; the sudden blast of the AC immediately sent shivers down their spines.  

“Shit, it’s cold in here.” Eren rubbed at the goosebumps on his arms. “Where’s the Men's locker rooms?”  

Annie adjusted her gym bag, “In the back, by the water fountain, I’m going there too, the Women’s locker rooms is right across.”  

As expected, the gym was sparse of members, only two women occupied by the treadmills and there were a few guys occupying the machines meant to train the arms, one skinny red-head sat on the Chest Press bench more focused on his phone than putting the machine to use.

Annie was quick to change into her spare shorts and tank top—she'd usually opt for a sports bra, but she’d learned from the last public gym she went too, a sports bra usually warranted unwanted attention.

She stuffed her clothes into a locker, clicked the number lock tight and was good to go, water bottle already at hand.  

Eren was known for taking his sweet time in the restroom; so, Annie went ahead and started her routine, beginning with the Leg Press machine. The strongest parts of her body were her legs, she intended to keep them as fit as possible.  

She was putting her water bottle down onto the mat when the red-head who’d been preoccupied with his phone sauntered over to her.  

“Hey.”  

Annie glanced at his equally red sneakers momentarily, slowly raising her head to meet a rather smug looking face. “Hey?”  

“I saw you come in a couple of minutes ago, you new here?”  

Annie perked an eyebrow, righting herself onto the seat of the machine. “This gym opened up two weeks ago, I think most of everyone is new here.”  

“Right, right.” He laughed.  

Annie began her work out, holding onto the seat and as she pushed out with her legs.  

The red-head eyed her with his chin in hand, as if he were some damned coach. Annie did her best to ignore him as she finished one set of ten reps.  

“Do you need any help?” The red-head inquired with a smile.  

“Nope.” Annie grunted, starting again.  

“You sure?”

“I’m... sure.”  

Then it was silent for a bit save for the loud clanking of weights being pushed—before he opened his mouth again.  

“Y’know, I’m a runner, I used to do track back in High school, had to do all these exercises for the legs, was a real trip.”  

Annie ignored him.  

“So, if you want any tips, I could offer you some?”

“No thanks.”

The red-head laughed then waggled an eyebrow at her, “Come on, maybe you can teach me than?”  

Annie stopped abruptly, dropping her arms. “Look I don’t know who are, or what you want but you’re not getting anything from me.”  

With that she fixed the cocky red-head with an ice-cold glare.  

He shrank away a bit, “Jeez, I was just trying to make conversation.”

“I’m busy, or do you not see me trying to exercise in peace?”

“People don’t usually mind chatting when they work out.” He huffed, as if that was a valid reason for being so invasive.  

Annie scoffed, “And men like you wonder why they’re single.”  

"Well that’s pretty rude of you.”

She rolled her eyes, “Go away now.”

“Hold on! I didn't mean to come off too strong, I’ll start over!”

Annie slapped her forehead.

“My name is Floche, and—”  

“I don’t care. I have a boyfriend.”  

Yet the red-head continued to talk over her, he hadn't even heard what she’d said. Annie slumped into the seat, frowning. Irritation and the urge to kick the man’s teeth in rising.

Back in the Men's locker room, Eren had just finished changing into a pair of cargo shorts and a gray T-shirt after a refreshing warm shower. He always preferred to bathe before and after an intense work out.  

Beside him another young man was struggling to put his own sweatshirt on—his arms weren't bending all the way to make the task any easier, and he was groaning in pain.  

“You good, bro?” Eren looked over at the other whose head was currently stuck inside his sweatshirt.  

“Yup! Yeah, I’m— I’m good!”

The young man's head eventually popped out, he sighed in relief than winced as he slowly lowered his arms.  

Eren smirked, grabbing his water bottle from inside the locker. “First time?”  

The other groaned, shaking his head “You don’t even know. Everything aches.”  

“Yeah, it’s like that in the beginning.”  

The young man held a hand out, “I bet. You look like a pro dude, I’m Connie by the way.”

Eren took his hand giving it a solid shake. “Eren.”  

Connie nodded, slamming his locker shut. “How long have you been working out?”

“Eh, four years, I think? I usually do exercise at home though; I don’t really like gyms.”  

“I bet. I don’t really like’em either, people stare at you if you’re a struggling newbie.”  

Eren made his way outside the locker rooms with Connie who feebly rubbed at his sore biceps.

Eren chuckled, “Already regretting it?”

“Do I regret it?” Connie sighed, “Yes. Would I do it again? Probably. I don’t know. I can’t feel my fucking arms.”  

Eren snorted.  

Across the gym area, there was a sudden loud crash followed by a girlish shriek. The two caught sight of a small seething blonde squeezing the life out of some red-headed man with her thighs.

The red-head seemed to be the one who was shrieking.

Connie whistled low, “Damn, wish I were in that guys place. Huh, Huh?” He grinned, nudging Eren with an elbow.

Eren blinked, sipping from his water bottle before handing it to Connie who awkwardly took it.

Eren shook his head, watching as the gym staff tried to intervene with the raging blonde.

He exhaled loudly, “Excuse me, I have to go make a scene before my girlfriend gets us banned from another gym.”

So you mentioned this in a post where you noticed a lot of parallels between Eren and Annie in the recent chapters, and how they almost mirror each others stance on this idea of committing yourself to bloodying your hands in order to ensure the safety of the people closets to you. I’m curious to know if you think these same parallels will develop even more in the coming chapters, and how do you feel Annie’s role will play out when it come to Eren.

I don’t think Annie will have a specific role regarding Eren. I’m imagining she will be part of the larger collective group effort that the new alliance will put together to reprimand and stop Eren.

However if Eren actually opens up when the confrontation happens, I think Annie is the one who’ll understand him the most so she could probably act as a mediator between him and AMJC because unlike them, Annie is not conscientiously burdened. And the way Eren is now he is not facing a moral crisis either. He has considered the odds and done what he needed to do so that his loved ones will be safe and as it stands Annie is the only one rn who understands that line of reasoning without regrets/self doubts

It’s not a coincidence that Mikasa assuring Eren that he is family and Annie saying what she has done was so that she could meet her family happen in two successive chapters. So yeah, there are parallels all over the place and they can be touched upon again when we get Eren’s POV because he’ll surely make a reference to the three most important and recurring motifs when it comes to Eren’s character- the train scene where he says his friends are more important to him than anything else, to his mother’s words, and to freedom. Now the first two will be heavily paralleled with Annie as she has already referred the most important person to her and his words as her motivation and drive too.

But this reiteration of Eren and Annie mirroring each other can happen only if Isayama is kind enough to offer us Eren’s pov. But also I’m guessing these parallels are an extension of Isayama’s deliberate attempt to mirror Eren and some of the Warriors I mean, just like how Eren said he and Reiner are the same, how Gabi was drawn as Eren’s parallel, Eren and Annie too echo each other’s drives to a certain extent. So well I hope we get Eren’s pov and then the parallels between them will be reinforced consequently.

One thing I’m looking forward too is seeing what Annie thinks about Erens decision to destroy the world. Both of them were close during their time as cadets so I’m wonder how she”ll handle the news if one of her first friends doing something so awful. Also I need Erens reaction to Annie’s return soo bad lol and a reunion of the two.

Yeah, but to be fair, I don't think they'll have a reunion/get the chance to...have a nice talk. I don't think anyone will get to properly talk with Eren anymore, aside from screaming from a distance probably (maybe that's what we hear in the exhibit audio actually - Armin trying to get Erensaur's attention).

I've been thinking about how Annie will react, it will probably be fear and confusion at first, maybe anger but also I can see understanding from her. I felt in the past she looked at Eren and she wished to be as strong as he was, so...I don't know. Maybe even a tragic laugh at the crazy situation. She said Eren was a person who was all about changing the corrupt and evil system, basically, and that that would entail the end of it all. And he's doing exactly that. So she sort of...knew. I'm curious to see how she's gonna feel in the end, but I bet she'll try to stop Eren with the others.

A part of me hopes she'll call bullshit. She's the only one with an outsider perspective, and she's also knowledgeable about "both" parties. Plus, she has a better understanding of the world, imo, because she's a realist.

So if all the people who have dealt with "this" Eren (Reiner, Galco, 104th) united in the same place and they talked about what he said to them, I feel like she'd point out the inconsistencies. They all have the pieces about Eren but they're too blinded by their own hurt, projections, desires, and anger.

As for Eren, if he realizes Annie was freed, he might actually feel relief. I don't know how he felt at Annie being trapped into the crystal, but everyone thought she was willingly staying there. I feel like this is not totally the case. If he somehow found out she was stuck in there, he may be happy for her and her renewed freedom.

Annie thought she was warming up to the idea of kids, but maybe Falco is a special case. He doesn’t run around screaming like the other children, he’s not a smartass, and he’s not a spoiled brat. He’s not constantly annoying her for attention, and she doesn’t have to worry about whether or not he’ll burn down the apartment when she has her back turned. But then this might just be Falco’s fault. He’s set the bar too high. Now, other kids seem like monsters in comparison.

“You look at her like she’s some kind of untrained mutt,” Eren whispers in her ear. The two of them watch the pair of children who are sitting on the couch playing videogames. Well, the dark-haired girl named Gabi – a girl Falco’s age who attends the same afterschool sports program – is playing Mario Kart while Falco watches.

“She hardly remembers to wipe her mouth after she’s eaten, and she got crumbs all over the carpet,” Annie grumbles. Her boyfriend places a soothing hand on her back, but Annie quickly shakes him off. She scowls at Gabi, but the child doesn’t notice the frowning woman because she’s too fixated on the race happening on the screen. “Why couldn’t Reiner ask someone else to watch his bratty cousin? Were Porco or Marcel out this week? And what about Pieck? Doesn’t she love kids or something?”

He laughs, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his head on her shoulder. This time, she doesn’t shake him off or pull away. “It’s just more convenient. He knows we usually look after Falco and it’s easy for us to pick up Gabi on the way. Besides, it’s only one more kid, right? And Falco’s manageable, so another one of his friends shouldn’t be too much for us to handle.”

His words are meant to be soothing, but they only make Annie more frustrated. “It’s not that the brat is too much to handle,” Annie snaps, trying hard not to sneer at the sight of the girl winning yet another round of Mario Kart and starting a new game without bothering to invite Falco. “It’s just that I don’t want us to have to be the ones to handle her.”

“Aw, it’s not so bad,” Eren laughs. He unravels his limbs and moves to clear up the kitchen, taking good care to scrub the spot where Gabi had sat. Unlike Falco, the girl was a messy eater, scrambling to eat her food as quickly as possible. It was like she was starving even though she had announced her strong dislike for Chinese food after Eren had told them they were getting chow mein and fried rice for dinner. Annie had glowered at the girl every single time she had dropped a grain of rice, but Eren just tried not to notice. She was still a kid, after all. “It’s like we’re a nuclear family now.”

“A family? Didn’t you have a mental breakdown that one time someone referred to Falco as your son?” Annie reminds him. It had taken Eren a full day to stop freaking out about looking old enough to be mistaken as a father. “And I’d hate to be related in any way to that gremlin over there.”

“Of course! Not a related-related family,” Eren says with a nod. He finishes clearing the table, setting all the dirty dishes in the sink to soak, and walks over to Annie. Lowering his voice, he says, “It’d be too incestuous if we were related for real. You know Falco has a crush on Gabi, right?”

You’d have to be blind not to know. Falco looks at Gabi as if she hung the moon the sky even though the most impressive thing that girl has ever done is hit a home run at a child’s baseball game. Frankly, Annie can’t understand why Falco likes that girl at all, but it’s Falco’s crush on the girl that has prevented Annie from kicking Gabi out of the apartment. If it were just Annie, she would have just left Gabi back at the youth center since she was Reiner’s problem anyway.

“It’ll pass,” Annie sniffs disapprovingly before shooting a glare at Eren. “And we’re nothing like a family.”

“No,” Eren says with a smile. He leans against the kitchen counter, his arms folded across his chest. “We’re kind of like a family. I mean, do you know what kind of meal I ordered tonight?”

“Don’t say it,” Annie growls.

“A Family Feast,” Eren says. Annie reaches up to pinch his cheeks, but he only laughs when she does. “And what are the kids playing right now? Mario Kart, a very family-friendly game, wouldn’t you agree?”

“How is it family-friendly when Gabi is hogging the game all to herself?” Annie grumbles, finally letting go of Eren’s face. If only she could give Gabi a good pinch – preferably a smack, really – every time the girl was being unruly. She looks over at the living room again, squinting at the screen and watching as King Boo passes the finish line in his monster of a kart. It’s not even as if Gabi’s that good, right?

Falco oohs and aahs as the final results screen pops up, showing King Boo – Gabi’s character of choice in Mario Kart – victorious. Even Eren walks over to compliment Gabi’s racing skills, that traitor. Reluctantly, Annie follows after him, but she refuses to sit on the couch with that brat.

“Hey, Ann,” Eren says, gesturing for his girlfriend to sit beside him. “Look at how good Gabi is. How many cups have you played, Gabi?”

“This one’s the third one,” Falco tells Eren, happy to brag for his friend, who is proudly puffing out her chest. Even though Gabi hasn’t let him play a single game since they’ve turned on the console, Falco doesn’t seem to mind at all. He’s content with just watching, that poor smitten boy. “Isn’t she great? She’s amazing.”

“It’s easy,” Gabi says with a shrug. She tries to appear humble, but her smug smile is failing her miserably. She flips through the menu, getting ready for the next round. “Do you guys want to watch me play the next one?”

How generous of you to let us watch, Annie thinks. She tries not to appear too outwardly annoyed. Instead, she reaches down to unravel the controller that Falco had put away and hands it over to the blond boy. “Why don’t you race with Falco, though. It seems more fun with a friend.”

“Oh, it’s fine,” Falco says, shaking his head hurriedly. “I really like watching.”

“And he’s so bad at this game,” Gabi sniffs. “He’s always getting in my way. I’d rather just play by myself.”

“But it’s so much more fun playing with people!” Eren says enthusiastically. He waves over at Annie, who brings him a controller. “And you know Annie? She’s a master at this game. I don’t think I’ve ever beat her. She can breeze through Rainbow Road as if it’s nothing.”

“Really?” Gabi says. She looks over at Annie, squinting at her. “She doesn’t look as if she’d be any good.”

It takes all of Annie’s restraint not to hurl the controller at Gabi. Instead, she hands it calmly over to a nervous Falco whose eyes are flitting worriedly between Annie and his friend. “I’m alright,” Annie tells her, unwinding a controller for herself. She decides to take a seat beside Eren, making sure not to sit right next to Gabi.

“Oh yeah!” Falco says. He looks relieved that Annie hasn’t decided to kick Gabi out of the apartment for being so rude. “Miss Annie’s amazing at this game!”

“Hm.” Gabi doesn’t look totally convinced. She turns back to the screen, selecting the screen for four players and moving to pick King Boo before anyone else can. “Let’s see how good you really are then.”

Annie would snap at her, but it’s easier to just teach the kid a lesson by totally obliterating her in Mario Kart. She’s finished picking her character and assembling her kart – Dry Bones on a motorbike – when Eren leans over and whispers, “Quality family fun time, am I right?”

“Shut up, Jaeger,” Annie hisses. She’s going to kick his ass too.
