Dalir is a Persian name for boys that means “brave”, “courageous” and Singh is a originally a Hindu Kshatriya name but now adopted by many different communities, from Sanskrit si?mha 'lion', hence 'hero' or 'eminent person'. It is freely added to Rajput and Sikh male personal names and in the U.S. often serves as a Sikh surname.
Hi, anon. Haha, so you’ve discovered why I gave Lotor and Allura the last names that I did in Adrenaline Rush, haha. I fell in love with those names when I was looking up possible surnames for them (Singh was suggested to me by a lovely person in the Lotura discord).
I’ve always thought it hard to give “human” last names to characters who don’t have one. I really wanted the names to have a particular meaning to their core personalities.
Thank you for looking up this information.:) If you read AR, I hope you enjoy this AU rendition of Allura and Lotor!
After (the Becky hating Angel) Miriam goes on a long rant about how Dean is Becky she then turns to Officer Barker and tells her “You’re on Barney Fife” as she eggs him onto killing Dean. This scene is all about DEAN.
Barney Fife: “Sometimes considered a blowhard with delusions of grandeur, he fancies himself an expert on firearms, women, singing, and just about any other topic of conversation brought up while he is around. Conversely, Andy (who Barney calls ‘Ange’ and I mean...just look at him) knows that Barney's false bravado is a smokescreen for his insecurities and low self-confidence. In one episode, Barney brags that he knows about the Emancipation Proclamation. When Andy calls Barney's bluff and asks him to elaborate it to Opie for his history class, Barney becomes upset and defensive and blurts out that it was a proclamation for emancipation and leaves, irritated.”
*Tink stares into the camera about Dabb bringing this link in here*
She then shows us that Dean’s first thought (and repeated throughout the episode) always go to Cas, reminding us that Dean thinks he’s the reason Cas fell and died and is wracked by guilt for it.
So we said season 12 broke down performing!Dean and showed a lot of this already in order to then further it in season 13. One episode in, one expositional character down and my tags #Dean Sublimation Winchester moving into #Dean Emancipation Winchester are already relevant.
SHERLOCK: Do you know why I’m going to take your case? Because of the one impossible thing you said.
FAITH/EUROS: What impossible thing?
SHERLOCK: You said your life turned on one word.
FAITH/EUROS: Yes. The name of the person my father wanted to kill.
SHERLOCK: That’s the impossible thing. Just that, right there.
FAITH/EUROS: What’s impossible
SHERLOCK: Names aren’t one word. They’re always at least two.
{...dialogue continues....]
SHERLOCK: That you remembered quite distinctly that your whole life turned on one word. I don’t doubt it but how could that one word be a name? A name that you instantly recognise that tore your world apart.
Do you ever think about how Hannah and Anna are the same name (meaning Grace) and each Angel works as a romantic exposition for Dean and Cas' feelings for each other?
Hi Tink! I've tried to find this on your blog but, holy moly, your #jackthenephelim is packed already! Sorry if you've already answered this but what is the significance of Jack's name? All I can think is that it is one of few traditional names that isn't biblical except maybe a derivative of Johnathan? Also it doesn't really have a nickname that Dean can use when he eventually falls for the Little Nougat . Thanks x
Hi!
Yeah sorry it was probably one of the first so a long time ago! I think I would have also tagged it #name meta.
For me Jack is reminiscent of the original, standard meaning of the name Jack which means “man”.
Therefore Jack is (yet another) exposition of humanity. Humanity, choice, love, hope and free will - which are the key themes of the show :)
So that’s what I think on the subject anyway! (Also I believe John Winchester was originally supposed to be called Jack but they couldn't do it for copyright reasons? I heard this rumour somewhere. So in a season all about fathers and humanity and John in particular being central.... I like this link too!)
Heyeee hello again😄 I just found this old post of yours saying: "Do you ever think about how Hannah and Anna are the same name (meaning Grace) and each Angel works as a romantic exposition for Dean and Cas' feelings for each other?". And I totally agree with u after 10x03 (the "distractions"speech of Cas), but I wanted to know if u have a long explanation of those of yours I love about it! (I really love your texts hehe) (and sorry if u have but I didn't scroll down enough to se it😅)
Hi! Thank you for the nice message :)
Do you mean name meta? Cos I did one for season 12!
Hm... the other angels as expositional characters too though, there’s
Rachel - Biblical: Jacob’s favourite wife. Kind of a right hand (wo)man.
Hester - was a young Hebrew woman in the bible who married the Persian ruler Xerxes and risked her life to save her people.
Daniel - “God is my judge”. Insinuates that they answer only to God for their choices and therefore do what they think is best without judgement from others.
Inias - reserved, serious and stubborn. loyal.
Ephraim - fruitful (regarding children). Associated with a lack of leadership.
So they all tie into their character meanings rather well I think :)
Here are a few name meta snippets that I thought were interesting in season 12… please feel free to add more if you think of some!
Jack: Man. Also often linked to John. FYI Chuck also means Man. So much excellent meta about this elsewhere that I won’t repeat but essentially, why have him called MAN if not to be important re: Humanity while we have already been told that he needs to be shown the “righteous path”.
Mary: (also linked to Amara, who’s name is linked to love in Latin and Immortal in Sanskrit, thanks @shixpe ) Mary & John of course represent the Christian parallel and meaning and therefore Sam & Dean = messianic figures.
Jefferson Rooney - Jefferson: Son of Jeff, Rooney: descendant of the champion. Repeated father imagery.
Roseleen (Vince Vincente groupie in 12x07): Rosalind in Shakespeare’s as you like it is the character who is loyal and true, revealing the true nature of the other characters as she does here through her and Lucifer’s actions.
Elka : means “oath to God”.
This is the episode right after we find out about the Angel’s sacred oath not to have relationships with Humans. Dean, disappointedly says of it “it’s like it never happened….figures”.
Loads more under the cut… there are some very interesting ones!
Mick - Michael link, of course. Soldier of god. Fitting as the Mol are heavily paralleled to the Angels and Heaven and Mick is portrayed as the Cas parallel as the soldier who rebelled.
Kelly: fighter, warrior, strength.
Magda: Mary Magdalene - stigmata
Max: Great one, fitting for his role as an extremely powerful Witch.
Arthur Ketch: A reference to Jack Ketch, an English executioner from the 1600s known for his “sadistically nuanced skills”.
Toni: Antonia - meaning praiseworthy.
Carmen
(waitress in 12x11): A reference to the “dream Carmen” in Dean’s Djinn dream. Not real, an illusion, something he is settling for but ultimately rejects.
Asa: Healer.
Vincent: To conquer.
Fiona: pure and light.
Marcus and Gwen (12x15): Gwen means of light and Marcus is reminiscent of Marcus Antonius, who died because of his love for Cleopatra, while Marcus here dies because of his love for Gwen.
Peter Bishop: Peter, the first Pope, the first disciple of Jesus. Fits as the lead disciple of the Pagan God in this episode.
Natasha Banes: Urban Dictionary: Natasha’s are always loyal and life long companions. Fitting for the theme of this episode around the witch creating companions.
There, perhaps there are many more or I may have missed something, but I enjoyed making this list :D
We all know that the names Sam and Dean come from On The Road, but I was wondering if you think that the author of On The Road being named Jack parallels the nephlim and Sam? Jack Kerouac is the character Sal (modified to Sam) in the book... so yeah.. any thoughts? :)
Idk, maybe? I mean Jack is likely to “end” it all... to bring a kind of peace (no don't go mad, I don't mean paradise, but you know what I mean), so it is a nice idea that it circles back.
BUT I am currently working on a name meta post for season 12 and Jack just means “man” and also is a variation on John, as @postmodernmulticoloredcloak says, Jack/John parallels and Amara/Mary parallels make total sense re: the boys arc, so it makes perfect sense to me that he’s called Jack in that sense, especially if it is Jack who will ultimately be the catalyst to defeat Lucifer and restore order to the universe... if he represents Humanity.
