you ever just sit and think, wow if Namor was canonically Asian it could open the door to so many environmental conversations that the news tends to snub? Like Japan going back to whaling, or western countries sending their excess trash via boat to poor Asian countries and leaving them out floating. Heck, the Philippines had to shut down a major tourist island because the beaches had gotten so polluted they just HAD to do a massive cleanup
The effects of pollution harming Atlanteans are in the comics alot. They are poison and Atlanteans die from it all the time. Also other things that point out how the Atlanteans are Native coded is how often the surface world tries to move into the oceans without their permission, occupy their land or try to set up a place for surface people to live. (reminds one of how colonizers did the same thing) So Namor/Atlanteans could really be any race of people who has been hurt by colonizers and by pollution harming them to the point it kills their food sources, and destroys their homes (Native Americans etc.) Namor is east-asian coded for sure imo.
More below the cut because I kinda got long with this.

hello wise subby fan i've been wondering this forever, apparently namor has 3 children with marrina but we've never seen them so do they even exist?? i also can't find the issue that says this to begin with
Hello! Yes, well the Namor/Marrina story arc is a bit of a hard read, mainly because it jumps around so many books. In the 80′s Namor didn’t have a solo, so he was appearing in different comics.
Here is the comic reading order for this arc where Namor appears:
- Alpha Flight (1983) #3-4, 12,14-16,35-40
(they get married in #40)
- Avengers (1963) #262-270,272,282-293
Namor weaves in and out of the comics and after their marriage he and Marrina settle for a short while before joining the Avengers, whom Namor had been a part of before he left to marry Marrina. Marrina is part alien, part human, and at one point they believe she was pregnant with the Poldex’s (marrina’s assigned alien mate) children, but suddenly it stops and she isn’t pregnant. (confusing I know). I personally speculate that her pregnancy went into some kind of hibernation, because it suddenly shows that later after Marrina turned into a sea monster, she has three eggs. Namor isn’t confirmed to be the father. It is speculated that he is though. After Marrina’s death he sets out to find the kids.
The Leviathan children are actually a dropped plot, they appear at the very end of the arc in Avengers #293 before swimming off into the ocean, never to be seen again until one Leviathan child appears briefly and dies in Namor, The Sub-Mariner (1990) Annual #4.
However Bryne’s writing in the 90′s series stated that Namor was sterile because of his hybrid nature. This is later contradicted by the 2007 Sub-Mariner series where Namor suddenly has a long lost son named Kamar (don’t get attached he doesn’t make it out of that series alive) and this is further explained in Agents of Atlas (2009) #6-7 that Namor struggles to have children easily and it only happens rarely.
I personally just ignore the Bryne writing when it comes to kids because it makes zero sense for Namor to be unable to have kids since the Atlanteans are a monarchy where the crown is passed to the next heir who possesses the blood of Neptune since the royal family is descended from him. This is the reason why Namor has claim to the throne, and why the Atlanteans and his grandfather tolerated him. Having Neptune’s blood also means that all magic flows through it’s ruler and Namor can be used as conduit for Atlantean magic like in the 2010 Namor the First Mutant series.
Hello !! Thanks for all the profiles and recs! I'm not sure if you know the answer (speculations are also welcome!) but is there any particular reason why the creators decided to recycle the Human Torch name for Johnny?
Hey you’re welcome!
So Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were fans of the older comics, so much so that when coming up with what would soon be the beginning of the Silver Age and the start of Marvel Comics (previously it was called Atlas and Timely comics) that they created Johnny and based his powers on the original Human Torch as a way to bring the Human Torch into the modern (at the time) era/use the Torch’s power for Johnny.
I believe in the later comics/retellings it is shown more how Johnny is a fan of the old school WWll era heroes and it’s said he named himself in tribute to the Original Human Torch. However in the first Fantastic Four comic Johnny simply states his new name as the Human Torch.
You can see Johnny reading an old comic in Fantastic Four (1961) #4 after leaving the team (this a Sub-Mariner comic). This in turn makes him recognize Namor in the flophouse and he helps the Sub-Mariner regain his memories thus bringing Namor into the Silver Age. The main reason why Namor wasn’t reinvented like the Human Torch was, is that Stan Lee liked the character of Namor so much that he just gave him amnesia and then had Johnny find him. Johnny finding Namor keeps up an old tradition and a call back to the first cross over between the Sub-Mariner and the Human Torch. The element of fire vs water.
Johnny meets the Original Human Torch for the first time in Fantastic Four (1961) Annual #4 when Jim Hammond was revived and then controlled by the Mad Thinker to fight Johnny:
