the air tasted of ash and old dreams, the world felt like it was holding its breath as if waiting for something, or someone. just like you were, for him.
three rotations ago, yejun’s voice had flickered through your comms, laced with static and urgency:
“if anything happens… find the north wing. i’ll be there no matter what it is. i promise.”
as the cold wind rustled at the ruins of the observatory, your fingers tightened around the pendant he left you. it was the last thing yejun gave to you before he left. silver, engraved with a dolphin on it with a sapphire gem to represent him.
“please, i need you here.”
you were just about to turn away when a familiar presence swept over you like gravity. the sound of heavy boots as it clanks with each step. the sound of his breath breaking the silence. that quiet aura that could only belong to one person.
“yejun.”
he stood at the edge of the broken path, armor scratched, eyes sharp, but softened the moment they met yours. that glimmer — bright like starlight with a touch of something deeper which never failed to make your heart ache.
“you came,” you breathed.
“i promised i would, didn’t i?” he replied. his voice was low, edged with something unspoken. “i would’ve crossed ten more war-zones to get back to you.”
“i- i really thought i had lost you.” you tried to hide the tremble in your voice.
for a moment, yejun didn’t speak. he just looked at you intently, all as if trying to memorize every line of your face, in case the universe tried to take you from him again.
he stepped forward and in one smooth motion, he wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into him. the metal of his armor was cold, but his embrace was just as you remembered. you wrapped your arms around his figure as you melted in his embrace.
“i kept hearing your voice,” he murmured into your hair. “it kept me alive.”
you closed your eyes, gripping the back of his suit like it was the only thing anchoring you.
he pulled back just enough to meet your gaze. his expression, usually unreadable to others, was wide open now. showcasing to you his bare and vulnerable state.
“i’m not just coming back,” he said quietly as his hands slide down your sides, reaching to hold your hands in his. “i want to stay. it doesn’t have to be here, as long as i'm with you. that's all i want.”
the words were soft, but they shattered something in you — not in a painful way, but in the way stars break open to become galaxies.
“yejun-ah…” you hesitated, brushing your fingers against the sharp line of his jaw.
“is this real?”
he leaned into your touch like it grounded him. “it couldn’t get any more real than this my love.”
you felt his hand slide behind your neck, moving his forehead closer to yours careful and slow, giving you every second to pull away but you didn’t.
his nose gradually touched yours and when he kissed you, it wasn’t desperate — it was full of quiet conviction. as if he’d waited forever and would wait again, as long as you needed. there was nothing more sacred than this one breath, this exact moment here with you.
let the world crumble or even the stars fade but here, wrapped in the arms of yejun who had once been nothing more than a distant protector, you felt whole.
he whispered against your lips, “let’s leave all this behind. you and me. somewhere quiet. just somewhere else where they won’t use you ever again.”
with that promise, you held his hand tight as the both of you set out there hoping the universe has greater plans ahead.
