Most Listened to Song: “Pour Some Coffee on Me” by Rhett & Link (I can explain lmao)
Thrive's smile became warm. "Tell me about your father."
"Oh, where to start." Warren drew his knees up and rested his elbows on them. "Well...he was crazy in love with my mom. They'd known each other for over twenty years by the time I was born and from what I've heard they rarely fought. When they did, Dad would always apologize first, even if he was in the right. Getting along was far more important to him than being right in a stupid argument."
"That reminds me of you," Thrive said, turning his attention to the window.
"He loved fishing and wasn't into sports, he really cared about all three of his kids, and was just as hurt when Adam and Layla abandoned us. When Mom died and they didn't even bother showing up to her funeral…." Warren swallowed. "I don't think he was ever the same. The realization that not only was his soulmate gone, but the children he made and raised with her couldn't even spare a fucking day to say goodbye…."
"Your parents sound wonderful," Thrive said.
Warren shrugged. "Just like anyone else, they weren't perfect, but they were the best parents they could be. I like to think I was close to both of them."
Thrive folded his arms. "Part of me wishes I'd taken the time to find out who my parents were. I always suspected an older Watcher I knew when I was young to be one of them because once I underwent entu'borah they didn't seem as friendly with me as they once were."
"Wow," Warren said. "It kills me to think that someone could've just...given you up or abandoned you."
"It happened more often than anyone liked to admit."
"How? How does that happen in a society where having a child literally can't be a surprise?"
Thrive ran a palm over his jaw. "There was a time when having at least one child was mandatory. Our population was, according to the Leadership, dangerously low. It never was. We'd been over a hundred billion in numbers since before I was born."
"Sounds like someone wanted to take over the galaxy."
Thrive idly gnawed on his thumbnail. "I do wonder."
"You think they wanted to make an obhelian empire throughout all of Ashva and conquer every planet? Jesus Christ, Thrive."
"We were horrible," he said. "I've said it before. The Leaders were unscrupulous for the most part. There was no shame in sight. If we were a violent people...I think we would've had prisoners in every civilization."
Other Notes: So “Pour Some Coffee on Me,” if it wasn’t a comedy song, sounds almost exactly like a song S|<ywaste would write. In fact, I’m sure if they did write it, it would be “Sunlight to Me” on their album Less Than.
