Cutting Stalks of Corn
Originally written during the corn harvest:
It's harvest time for the corn, which means Nanuca and Vanea are hard at work in the valley. Vanea cuts the stalks with a sickle and puts them in piles of thirty, while Nanuca shucks the corn and tosses the cob into a pile. They've been working together for years, so they make good time, in spite of being a little past their working prime.
I decided to be a farmer for the day, so I helped to cut eight rows of corn. Initially I couldn't get the right angle and motion, but after Vanea explained his technique, I was cutting like a pro. Vanea instructed me to start at the part of the sickle nearest my hand, between the “joints” of the stalk, and to pull at a diagonal angle. With proper use, the sickle makes cutting stalks remarkably easy.
Today we cut all of Nanuca's stalks, which leaves Vanea's for tomorrow. While Vanea cuts, Nanuca shucks and that'll take until the day after tomorrow.
