the two of them are sitting in her room - no, their room, she reminds herself. theirs. she can thank lewis for that. our mission commander ordered us to is a really strange reason to move in with a guy, but she’ll take it. at least she’s not having them charged with fraternization.
he’s sitting on her bed, and she is sitting not so much on his lap as across it - perpendicular, leaning back against her propped-up pillows, his legs bent at the knees over the side of the mattress and hers stretched out across his lap. she balances a laptop on her legs, absently scrolling with two fingers on the trackpad as she reads.
“you know how boring this is, right?”
she has one of his medical journals open. her idea, not his, despite the fact that the only thing close to a medical term she can consistently remember the meaning of is ibuprofen – she wanted to see what all the fuss was about, she said. the rest of them brought music, literature, television; in her case, a significant portion of her video game library, now tragically left behind on a laptop on mars (it’s okay - she has hard copies). chris brought a bunch of these. there’s got to be something to them. she has yet to figure out what.
oh, and she also plans to use this as a sort of bargaining chip – i tried your weird doctor journals, now you have to try my extensive collection of nancy drew novels, it’s only fair. have fun. wow. that sounded a little diabolical. she didn’t mean it to. he’ll like them. who doesn’t like nancy drew?
“so boring. what is – pneumonoul- i can’t even pronounce that.”
without changing her position - setting the laptop aside, scooting closer to him, pulling herself up - there is no way for her to reach his cheek, let alone his mouth, unless he moves his head down for her. and she does not want to change her position, she is quite comfortable here, so she sits up from where she is, plants a soft kiss as far up as her lips can reach – the curve of his jaw, clean -shaven, like she likes him best.
“your taste in literature kind of sucks.”
she says it affectionately, at least.
