BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) CEO’s Controversial Comments On Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s Encryption
BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) CEO John Chen has openly criticized Apple Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL) security measures and strict stance on privacy.
The Blackberry CEO stated that the encryption measures make sense as far as security is concerned but it also presents some degree of danger to society. Mr. Chen was speaking during the latest security summit that was held in New York. He was specifically commenting on the government’s request for user data to be handed over for security monitoring purposes. Chen, however, did not mention Apple by name directly though it was quite clear what he meant by his statement.
Chen pointed out that the Blackberry rival would have a negative influence on the society if it continues with its “don’t care” attitude. The CEO also stated that his company does not plan to help out in any way regardless of the situation. This has led to questions about Blackberry’s stance on the encryption and privacy violation matter. Apple managed to scoop the win against the FBI in a legal battle fueled by the San Bernardino shooting incident. Numerous tech companies were in support of the iPhone maker but Blackberry seems to be siding with the government on this particular issue.
It is unclear why the Blackberry CEO is siding this way however, since unlocking a single iPhone is simple, speaking from a technical standpoint, and Apple has no problem with that assuming a warrant is issued. What the government wants is access to the whole network so they can monitor anyone who uses an iPhone, and this is what Apple opposes.
Blackberry’s argument suggests that it approves handing over private user information to the government in various situations. Chen described Apple’s decision as disturbing and stated that every firm should be subject to a basic civil duty which it should respond to when called upon by governments. Of course, the CEO was referring to Apple’s failure to grant the FBI backdoor access to an iPhone 5C that is said to have been used by one of the terrorists in the San Bernardino shooting. Apple’s argument is that backdoor access would potentially give the government access to anyone’s iPhone.
Mr. Chen’s stance on the matter was viewed to be unorthodox since his firm has always been considered as secure and data sensitive. The Blackberry CEO further pointed out that handing over data to the relevant authorities should not be condemned as long as there are clear reasons for the data request.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Finalizes The Laying Off Of 1,350 Employees in Finland
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s May announcement of laying off 1,350 workers in Finland has been finalized after the conclusion of the co-determination negotiations. The company had noted that slashing off these employees is an outcome of it plans to streamline its smartphone hardware business. The company’s product development in Tampere central southern Finland, as a result, would be shut down. According to STT, Microsoft plans to implement the layoffs soon, and the process of redundancies is expected to be complete by the end of June 2017.
When Microsoft first announced its layoff plan, it created a lot of anxiety with some Finnish politicians accusing the company of breaking promises it had made when it purchased Nokia’s business in 2014. According to the politicians, Microsoft had pledged to inherit about 5,000 former Nokia workers after the $7.2 billion buyout of Nokia.
Microsoft move might be as a result of Windows-powered smartphones only accounting for 1% of global smartphone sales as of May this year. According to Eddie Murphy, a telecoms analyst at Priory Consulting, Microsoft was right in joining the smartphone industry though they were just too late. Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Android device and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS devices have dominated the space with Windows barely making an impact.
One of the primary problems that Microsoft faced is the app gap – a shortage of popular apps for its smartphone. This issue was a major challenge to BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s BB10 operating system. Microsoft’s has tried to fight the app gap by introducing a common Windows 10 platform that allows apps to work across, desktops, tablets, and mobile. The company also announced a smartphone running Windows 10 that could transform into a desktop PC could transform into a desktop PC.
Murphy noted that recent moves by Microsoft have been as a result of close observation of what Google did with Android. The dominance of Android is because it is open and other companies can use it.

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) Confirms That It Will Not Discontinue Its Physical Keyboard
BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) users who love the physical keyboard do not have to worry as the firm has announced that it does not plan to discontinue the physical keyboard anytime soon.
The announcement was a response to press reports suggesting that the Canadian firm will no longer include physical keyboards in its handsets. The announcement follows a previous reveal about the company’s decision to do away with the Blackberry Classic which featured the iconic keyboard design. The company still has other handsets that feature physical keyboards. The firm already has the Blackberry Passport and the Blackberry Priv in the market and both handsets feature physical keyboards.
The announcement that the company will stop manufacturing the Classic model was made yesterday. It was the last handset from the company that featured the iconic keyboard and it had been thought that the keyboard design would die along with the handset. However, that is not the case according to the recent announcement. It is not clear what the company is planning, but Blackberry has confirmed that the physical keyboard will remain a signature part of the Blackberry identity.
As for future devices, there are rumors that the firm is planning to release three new handsets this year, including a handset that will feature a physical keyboard. The company still believes that its fans prefer the physical keyboard despite the speculation in the market that the physical keyboard has become obsolete.
The Canadian company, however, believes that the physical keyboard is part of the reason why it still has a loyal fan base and thus the need to keep manufacturing phones that have feature both touch and physical keyboards. Blackberry is also determined to make sure that its Blackberry OS remains relevant through updates while it embraces the Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Google Android OS. The firm is aware that the physical keyboard is one of its strong suits which will remain available for the foreseeable future.
