Learning to Breathe (2016)

Draining my emotional resources, yet again, by thinking about this filmic exercise in self-sabotage.

This film isn’t the best, but it’s far from bad. The cinematography is gorgeous, and the plot is so-so yet effective. Many scenes were improvised.

The whole thing is terribly relevant to me, not because of its technical or narrative qualities, but because of its impact. The topic, the intent, the circumstances of its making. It resonates with my inner workings, tugs at my heartstrings, and triggers memories. This depiction of raw heartbreak is making me ill.

What truly floors me is Sam’s emotional lucidity as an actor. His performance transcends the screen without any loss of intensity, whether it’s feelings of love, anger, doubt, grief, confusion, or lust – the entire spectrum is conveyed even in the smallest gestures. Additionally, the shameless direction of Turner, who practically sticks his camera right into their faces while they go through the motions. The shaky handheld aesthetic only contributes to the zero-distance-feeling.

Turner definitely tried to get something out of his system with this film, and Sam and Natalia threw themselves at it, as performers and, yes, as a couple. Bold. Maybe reckless.

There’s an element of exploitation here, though it’s consensual. I can’t shake the impression that the director and performers are eating themselves up. To a satisfying end? I don’t know. It feels pyrrhic, paving the way to burnout, as Turner apparently experienced, which led to the postponement of the release.

The film didn’t receive a wider release or promotion. Has Sam even mentioned it since 2014? There was the posting of the songs on the Mover page and SoundCloud in 2017, I think. It’s now available on streaming platforms, benefiting from Sam’s moderate fame, so it’s not a failure.
