Right?? It's so frustrating to not be able to really KNOW until you get there. There's no way to actually check it out. They are only going to say good stuff about themselves and most of the people online only post a review if they're REALLY upset. So...there's no middle ground or accuracy and IT'S SO EXPENSIVE THIS IS SO NERVE WRACKING.

okay so behind the cut for spoilers, i guess?

they take away so much agency from katniss that it’s fucking unreal. i guess that they forgot that the last movie ended with her shooting an arrow into the forcefield/face of president snow and looking into the camera with defiance because she doesn’t seem to have any interest in this revolution from the jump. people will tell me this is true to the books. no. they sketch out the broader strokes (i.e. “there can’t be a ceasefire”) but they never vocalize why katniss wants to be the mockingjay. it’s fucking unbelievable, frankly. honestly they could have done what they wanted with gale, and they did, but touching katniss’ very real very poignant investment in the revolution is unforgivable. even at its height (d8) her anger is directed into propaganda by cressida (which happens, by the way, at every turn) rather than (as in the book) it happens and is captured and crafted. d8 is all about katniss finding and using her power (however briefly). take that away from me and i will come for blood.

instead, what we get is a massive shift towards katniss doing this for peeta. when frankly in the book that has all of nothing to do with why she is choosing to become the mockingjay. he becomes a concern later on, post d8, and she wants him to have immunity/be safe but he is not a motivating factor in her decision making on the revolution front.

the film is done in this bizarre way where it’s half catching fire spectacle/blockbuster, and half gary ross style focalization. it feels very strange. especially when katniss has so little in the way of agency or decision making going on it just feels bizarre.

fuck effie trinket fuck effie trinket fuck effie trinket. effie trinket does not belong anywhere near this movie and she’s supposed to be lightening the mood and instead it’s just a massive distraction and i hate it. she doesn’t get an arc, so points for that but still fuck effie trinket. (also she and haymitch flirt, it’s gross, haymitch would never, etc.)

fuck playing haymitch’s alcoholism for laughs. he’s done it before. it’s still nasty as fuck.

we lose a lot of gale/katniss and i guess they are afraid, like elyssa said, to actually make this a narrative of loss even though it is. even though that is all that is good about this book. i hate that katniss loses everything but you know what, at least the book pulls no punches. by pulling the tenderness of this relationship from this film, lawrence is undercutting the tragedy of this series. and given that’s all we get from this series, fuck that noise.

that gale scene is still gross. if softened somewhat by him getting earlier lines that affirm he understands that peeta is trying to protect katniss. then again, it just makes it all the weirder when he gets awful about it later.

then we get to the part where this entire movie just underlined for me how much i hate this fucking book. they absolutely pushed a message through towards the end, and that message (articulated by president fucking snow no less) was “the things you love will destroy you.” (how unnecessary is that scene. how much do i hate that scene. fuck this movie.) and oh, is katniss ever destroyed. goodie. the girl who rose above her fear, her drive to protect that which is most personally important to her, to lead a revolution that was necessary and terrified her, only to be immobilized and laid low by the boy that she loves? will never not be fucked up. will never not make me lose my mind. great, war turns our loved ones against us. can make them hurt us. kill us. except that love should make you strong. even then. i know in real life there are a whole range of things that happen, but here, in fiction, where we are not dealing in verisimilitude alone but thematics? fuck that. peeta’s harm at the hands of the capitol should not make katniss turn around and want to give everything to president snow to make him stop hurting peeta. should not make her look at the revolution and think it’s wrong. i hate this book. i hate this book. i hate this book.

the pacing sucks, but they at least cut the book in the right place.

Ha well it’ll be harder when I come out to my parents but then again I know my parents love me and I find them easier to talk to in general so it’ll be easier in a different sense. But thank you. Honestly I don’t feel brave. I feel like someone who unnecessarily made a perfectly decent conversation into a really awkward one. XD

But I really appreciate your support and I’m feeling so much better now that I’ve gotten so many lovely messages in my askbox, fanmail and comments on my post. Tumblr’s let me escape from an environment that’s not really very accepting to one that is and I’ve been listening to music I like while eating cake which has helped a lot too.
