Do you ever wonder how humpback whales and dolphins sleep?? Humpback whales are conscious breathers which means that they always have to remember to breathe, even while sleeping (Mosbergen, 2014). Scientists believe that in order to remain alert enough to breathe, humpback whales shut off only half their brain at a time while sleeping (Mosbergen, 2014). Bottlenose dolphins also shut down half their brain while they sleep along with their opposite eye. Half their brain stays alert to watch for predators and to signal when to go to the surface for air. After approximately two hours, the two parts of the brain switch off with the resting part now becoming active (Fick, 2019) . If you're ever lucky enough to come upon a sleeping whale or dolphin it is an incredible sight.
