"Like I would really leave you here alone? Not happening." - Nate
Dear Buffy - Solo by Nathan Tate
Dear Buffy, Forewarning, I’m sorry if you can’t read my handwriting. Did you know in college they have classes for teachers to learn how to write horribly? Teasing. I’m just still in a tremor-state due to the medication and, well, the fact that I was treated like a fish by a vampire with my own kitchen knife. There’s an irony in that, somewhere. I don’t know where but I’ll find it one day. You’ll hear the “Eureka” a million miles away.
Leaving Sunnydale - Solo by Nathan Tate
Dear Sandy, By the time you read this letter I won’t be living in Sunnydale any more. I’ll try to call when I can, but for right now some things are kind of… coming up from the roots. I’m moving to Los Angeles to help out a friend with some rent on their new place. I’ve stayed there already and I don’t mind the neighborhood—it’s nicer than anything we could have ever saved up for. I know it’s sudden and you and Mum might be mad that I didn’t exactly tell you but… some things happened back in Sunnydale and I can’t stay there anymore. Not for some time, anyway.
The Call
A Journey - Solo by Nathan Tate
{No one has ever truly given you a weird stare on public transportation until you’re holding a crossbow. What, like I was going to put it under the bus and leave myself defenseless? Not happening. And not like it was a crowded trip, there were plenty of open seats. My crossbow wasn’t taking up anyone’s “spot” on the bus. They could just deal with it. There’s an old lady to the left a few rows up who’s been glaring at me like I’m some sort of Satanic consort half of the ride. Her face was so wrinkly and her frown set so deep if it weren’t for the (admittedly freaky) bright blue eyes I would have thought her a vampire. God, old people were more terrifying than some demons.
Who Am I - Solo by Nathan Tate
{Though Spike and I turned in before our usual time of right at the crack of dawn, I find myself unable to sleep. Whether it’s the blood and adrenaline rush of hunting so late at night, the thrill of nearly getting killed (and having to rely on a killing machine to save me if need be) It may be the dreams that still haunt me no matter what I try to do to stop them, those were unfortunate. My usual regimen of five sleeping pills just wasn’t doing it anymore. Not even hospital-issue morphine could stop it. I miss dreamless, peaceful sleep. The sleep that I could wake up from and feel alive again. I think I just miss feeling alive.
Life After Near Death - Solo by Nathan Tate
{Sometimes, when I’m halfway between dreaming and being awake, I think of that moment. A loop in my head. Sometimes it’s ten seconds. Sometimes it’s ten hours. Over and over and over and over again and it just won’t stop. Fire licking at my lungs, blood curdling like spoiled milk in my mouth. I never think of when we were stabbed. It happened, it’s done. I never see her again, watching her splutter and choke on her own breath as she slowly bleeds out. I had relived it enough during my unconsciousness in the hospital, maybe the memory has worn itself out in my mind. I can recall it if I need to, but who would need that? Who would want the worst failure of their life on repeat?

“You’ve reached Nathaniel Tate, sorry I couldn’t reach you but I’m out at the moment. Leave a message and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you.”
“/At the tone, please record your message. When you are finished recording you may hang up, or press one for more options/.”
“Hey Nate! It’s Sandy. Sorry I couldn’t answer earlier, I had a meeting with the Financial Aid Office the other day. Guess what? They accepted my application! I’m in for a full ride next year and every year after! I can’t believe it bro—I’m really gonna do it! Big business and all! Anyway, yeah, thought I’d share that with you. Mum’s good, still out of work but she’s getting compensation so it’s no biggie. I did the shopping yesterday. Call me back when you can! Love you.”
