National Pineapple Day! It’s a thing! While the holiday may inspire many of us to celebrate with something a little stronger than water, we’re keeping it work-friendly for the time being with this pineapple-styled water tower, once located on the grounds of the Dole Pineapple Cannery factory near Honolulu, Hawaii.

Built in 1928 by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company using steel produced in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the water tower provided reserves for the cannery’s fire-prevention sprinkler system. It also brought so much attention the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company that it was later commissioned to construct similar architectural wonders, such as the Gerber Baby Food tower in Rochester, the  Rend Lake Conservancy District golf ball water tower, Georgia’s ‘Peachoid’, and many others. This photograph was taken at some point between 1950 and 1970 on behalf of the Public Relations Department of the American Iron and Steel Institute. I always loved elements of it but it never felt right - until now. It's funny how you could feel like you're not making progress but looking back just two years I can see I've grown so much. It's so encouraging. Revisiting paintings was something I'd never do before (I'd rather just start fresh!), but I thought I'd try something different and it was a surprising source of inspiration.
