Many of you may or may not know that my mother survived back to back massive strokes 5 years ago. She was then diagnosed with diabetes and unable to speak or walk. Fast forward a few years we learned she was being over medicated causing her kidneys to almost fail and causing her to endure dialysis 3 times a week for over 2 years. Then in February she was fighting a severe blood infection caused by the port used for her dialysis. WELL...Today she finished her first 5k!!! She has overcome diabetes and miraculously her kidneys started functioning recently and she no longer needs dialysis! She is not only my hero but an inspiration to everyone she encouters. I am overjoyed and so proud of you Mom! My first stroke 2003

I wake up startled, looking around frantic. My right arm numb to my body, my senses, myself… I eagerly sit up. Shaking, trembling, trying to hold steady to sip my water on the nearby table. Its too hard, the convulsions are greater now. I decide I need to do something, anything! Fear overcomes me, “What the hell is going on?!?”, I cry to myself as I crawl down the hall to my (older) sisters room, dragging the right side of my body. Finally, I reached her room! Trying to be as quiet as possible in waking her up because I noticed my little nephew in bed next to her. My lips quiver holding back the tears. Not being able to be silent anymore my mouth flew open and I cried. My sisters eyes shuttered open and she quickly sat up realizing I wasn’t right. I could barely talk, I believe I was trying to tell her my right side of my body was incoherent to the world, and most importantly ME! But it didn’t completely come out that way. She woke up my nephew and with a quick swoop she grabbed him up and put him in the car. Then she came for me, I was in the hallway at this point flopping around like a fish out of water. (as my sister said) she picked me up and threw me in the passenger seat and slammed the door. Being me…I take nothing serious, so I said to her as my convulsions continue and my head hits the window, “I need a helmet!” We finally arrived at the hospital my sister parked the car at the entrance and ran over to the passenger side. She grabbed me out of the car, a nurse came with a wheelchair. They rushed me in, my sister parked and brought my nephew in. First question they ask, “what drugs is she on?” smh.* -By:Desiree D.
