Last I stayed up swayed by the idea of soft tender love, but not just any kind of soft tender love! I kept imagining older Two-spirit love, two ndns who grew old together and was still so in love with one another... I was so controlled by my artistic will that I could not sleep until I at least got the sketch out of the image I had in my head out onto paper.

How did you feel about the movies use of native culture?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I don’t have the book in front of me and it’s been about a year since I’ve read it, as a disclaimer. 

Firstly, as a creator, if someone is thinking about using an aspect of some Indigenous culture in their work but doesn’t include an actual Native character, or consult actual Native people and ask them if it would at all be appropriate (it probably won’t be btw) in the first place……….don’t.

But, the Ritual of Chud is a big part of the book. I know that. I recognize that. I expected to be made uncomfortable by however they chose to portray it in the adaptation, and I was. (More under cut) 

Seeing Native people used as a prop in a movie not about Native people is…gross. Generally speaking. 

It wasn’t awesome and I didn’t enjoy it, but it also wasn’t as…shittily done as in the book, if that makes any sense. I’ll explain a little. 

I have personally participated in a sweat lodge ceremony. Only one, with no medicines/plants/etc involved to induce visions. However - and this is from a generally not religious person - it was a very spiritual experience. It is a very sacred thing, especially when Indigenous medicines are involved. A bunch of nonnative kids in the 60s making a smokehole out of their clubhouse is disrespectful, especially when Indigenous peoples were not legally allowed to practice their religions until 1978 (see: American Indian Religious Freedom Act). 

Going from that, Mike going and actually speaking to Native people and being invited to the ceremony was better. HOWEVER, Mr. Hanlon, stealing a religious artifact? Uncool. Using a sacred root to drug your friend without his consent or without the oversight of an elder with the knowledge and permission to handle that medicine? Uncool. 

I feel that I could ramble about this for a long time, and I kind of feel like doing so, but I have an errand to run soon. I might add more later, esp if someone asks me to elaborate. 

Long story short, it was a little better than in the book, but still uncomfortable. It was an expected discomfort. I expect discomforts in horror movies. I shouldn’t have to expect this kind of discomfort. Amid plots of sexual assault and racism and homophobia - and all of those being presented clearly as evil acts - we are handed insensitive and racist treatment of Indigenous people and it is fine because Indigenous people in horror, as a genre, are nothing but an excuse as to how you learn to defeat the villain. Because, often, we are seen just as mysterious and not real as the alien they’re fighting. 

So…yeah. It isn’t anything I’m boycotting the movie over. It didn’t wholly stop me from enjoying it. I just wish I didn’t have to expect those particular discomforts.

if you identify as gay/lesbian/trans/bi/nonbinary/etc. to as well as 2s, its fine! you arent any less for doing so

if you dont, thats fine too! you shouldnt feel like you have to identify a certain way if you dont want to or if you dont feel like its right for you

if youre ndn and lgbt, but you dont consider yourself two-spirit, thats fine! just go with whatever feels right, you arent betraying your ancestors by not using words that you arent completely content with

if you are not native american, please respect our culture, do not take our terms for yourself and do not treat them as if they cannot stand on their own, as if they have no meaning and history
