Religious Studies Term Of The Day: Transformer or Changer Hey everyone. I thought today I’d talk about another divine figure in Native American religious traditions, one I’ve come across in my readings on the Coast Salish. I cannot even begin to go into a ton of detail to completely explain this idea because there are so many stories across different tribes and traditions, so I encourage people to look into the different versions of Transformer (also translated as Changer). My particularly favorite story is when Transformer, as the Moon, names the Salmon people, even appointed the Chief of the Salmon I’ve talked about previously, who appears in the First Salmon Ceremony. Anyway, I’m always open to questions from the curious and corrections from those in the know, but I’m just hoping to get religious literacy up and going for everyone. Religious Studies Term Of The Day: Syó’wən Pronunciation Guide: Syo-(glottal stop)-wuhn A glottal stop is the sound you make when you go “uh-oh” between the “uh” and the “oh” and the upside e is called a schwa which makes an uh sound like in sofa or just. This is the word in the Coast Salish languages that is a catch all for this concept. It is the power you get from a guardian spirit, a very sacred reality of the Coast Salish faith. It is also the name of the winter ceremony in which a person does a ceremonial dance to get this guardian spirit’s power. But it’s also the name for the dance itself at this winter ceremony that allows the person to have the guardian spirit’s powers. Remember when I said that the Salmon People wear salmon masks and skins to become the salmon? That’s the same concept with these dances. Donning the mask of a guardian spirit and doing the dance helps you acquire that spiritual power. It’s a really cool@aspect of their culture that I highly recommend looking more into. Religious Studies Term Of The Day: Raven Raven is a trickster from the Pacific Northwest who is the protagonist of numerous stories told by numerous tribes across the region. Stories like how he stole the Sun and moon are quite popular, but he’s also featured in stories about the creation of humans and the world. My personal favorite is the Raven and the Whale. If you have some time and want to do some reading, look up some Raven tales.
