A Story of Protein
Scientists have known for some time that amino acids and short peptides were a vital component of the development of life on Earth. Nevertheless, this left them with the question of how these chemicals got here in the first place. According to Zita Martins, from the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, the answer may be that they were created when comets or rocky meteorites fell into Earth. It seems to be likely that the shock wave produced when one of these objects hit, was hot enough to create the building blocks of life itself. The high temperature and pressure from the impact made several amino acids, including glycine and alanine, which are vital to protein. Furthermore, scientists think they know where these meteors came from. The large amounts of ice on the moons Enceladus and Europa, make them the most likely starting point for the life giving meteors. Still, as one question seems to be resolved, many others remain unsolved, such as how did amino acid develop even more complex molecules such as proteins? Now whilst this is obviously fascinating, protein as an active agent plays a very important part in the building blocks of our health – and one of the lesser known realities of modern life, is that acid reflux medicines known as PPI’s or Proton Pump Inhibitors are often used to treat GERD. However, they have less well known side affect, and that is to reduce the stomach’s capacity to absorb proteins. This can lead to many other health issues.
