land spirits do not have to be dramatic.

sometimes reverence for land starts very simply:

learning the names of local plants. noticing where water gathers. thanking a tree before taking from it. picking up trash. leaving a place better than you found it. sitting quietly long enough to feel the mood of the land.

animism is not always spectacle.

sometimes it is relationship, attention, and care.

animism, in simple terms, is the belief or worldview that the world is alive with presence.

not just humans. not just animals. but rivers, trees, mountains, stones, weather, places, ancestors, and more.

animism does not always mean “everything has a human-like soul.”

sometimes it means everything participates in relationship.

the question becomes less “is this object alive?” and more:

how do i live respectfully in a world full of beings?

Animist Challenge for You Today 🏞️

This challenge is super easy, so please just try it for yourself—you may just see a difference in your day.

Thank one animal you see, either in your head or aloud. For example: “Thank you for being here. I see you. I honor your existence.”

Look up at the sky, notice the clouds, feel the wind on your face, smell the fresh air and blooming flowers. Just observe—that’s all. In your heart, feel the gratitude you have for the sky above you.

Where safe, take off your shoes and feel the ground under your feet. If you can’t walk barefoot, touch the ground and thank it for the life it provides. The food it gives you.

Try to do all three if you can. If you can’t, believe me—it is more than okay. A simple prayer of gratitude in your heart is enough as well.

some are poured into the soil and answered years later as green.

Went on a walk today, and I saw these two beautiful white stones. So polished from years of tumbling in water. I looked at it and it was as if it looked back at me, like a friend, a tired friend from a long journey. So, with care and consideration, I picked it up, told it that it was safe to rest, put it in my pocket, cleaned it up, and now it’s on my altar where it can finally rest. That my people is what I’m referring to when I mean simple animism. Stay safe, and keep loving the earth.
