Follow the Sugarbird 🌱🍇 The Biodiversity and Wine initiative actively works towards demonstrating a find balance between nature and farming. Cape Sugarbirds are endemic to the Cape Floral Kingdom, feeding mostly on the nectar of flowering proteas, pollinating these indigenous flowers. As proteas become restricted due to habitat loss, the sugarbird’s existence is affected. The synergistic relationship illustrates the synergy between wine and conservation. As 95% of South Africa’s wine is produced in the Cape Winelands, vines and other crops compete for space with the Cape’s unique vegetation. @wwfsouthafrica’s Conservation Champions use the sugarbird and protea logo on their products to demonstrate their dedication to the conservation of the Cape’s floral biodiversity. The Cape is home to over 9500 plant species - 70% of which occur nowhere else in earth.
