Piglet noticed that even though he had a very small heart, it could hold a very large amount of gratitude!
This has to be one of the most beautiful times of the year when the changing colors around us help us turn inward and reflect. The oranges, golds and reds form a gentle but stunning backdrop against which all that we need to be grateful for, stands out clearly. This year, everytime we bend our heads against the unexpectedly chilly winds for this time of the year, and then come back into our warm and beautiful classrooms, we are reminded of how much we have to be grateful for.
We are grateful for the wonderful environment we are blessed with. Indeed when you see the children in the classroom and outside, you realize we are in a place that truly allows childhood to remain intact. Many teachers in other schools lament on how difficult it is to keep the children’s attention at such a time. Montessori solves that by extending the classroom outside – the changes we see around us are experienced, reflected on and discussed. Then, it is no longer a distraction but an educational opportunity.
While the children continue to work, learn and grow, we have een spending some more time these past few days reflecting and sharing our reflections. This is a great time to pause and initiate discussions on the difference between wanting and needing. So we make it a special point to discuss with our students the concepts of abundance and responsibility, sharing and, empathy for those less fortunate. Children are naturally compassionate and empathy is second nature to them. Conversations on Harvest, Nature’s generosity, our blessings, and so on are great teaching and learning moments.
We are working on a collaborative art project that embodies this spirit of gratitude as well as community. We look forward to sharing this with you at our Gallery Night at the end of the week.
This seems also the right time for us as the adults in your child’s educational journey at school, to thank you...for your trust, support, partnershp and thoughtfulness.And most of all, for the incredible honor and joy that you have bestowed upon us in sharing your children with us. For this, we are truly thankful!
