On April 14th, 1964, the princely family visited the Navy Museum (Museu da Marinha). The Minister of the Navy at the time, Admiral Fernando Quintanilha, not only received the royal visitors but also took a guided tour of the museum himself.

Wall Guns of the Portuguese Navy dated to the 18th and 19th Centuries on display Navy Museum in Lisbon

The top gun was made in the 18th century during the regency of Prince João whose initials are engraved on the flintlock mechanism. The barrel however was made during the 17th century and refitted for the blunderbuss stock.

The bottom gun is of French origin and dated between 1804 to 1815, when Imperial France was supplying the pro-French forces in Portugal.

Wall guns like these were loading with grape shot and would be used to clear the decks of enemy ships before boarding.
