Victories, brawls and what to expect from the NBA this week

Oh no he didn’t; oh yes he did! The NBA always brings heaps of action and drama and this season has been no exception. This weekend, a few of our favourite ballers got suspended for brawling on the court. It was most certainly action-packed so here are the details.

Los Angeles Lakers forward Brandon Ingram has been suspended four games without pay, Lakers guard Rajon Rondo has been suspended three games without pay, and Houston Rockets guard Chris Paul has been suspended two games without pay, for their roles in an on-court altercation on 20, October at Staples Center. With only 4:13 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of the Rockets’ 124-115 win over the Lakers, the brawl was a sight for sore eyes. The suspensions were announced by Kiki VanDeWeghe, Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations.

Paul will begin serving his suspension tonight when the Rockets face the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center. Ingram and Rondo will begin serving their suspensions on Monday, 22 October, when the Lakers host the San Antonio Spurs.

NBA opening night games set to thrill

The opening night of the 2018-19 season will soon be upon us and basketball fans the world over, who have been eagerly waiting to see how all the moves affect their teams and how it will affect the league, will finally get a taste of what to expect.

They will not be disappointed.

The two opening night games are set to thrill on Wednesday the 17th of October. One of which is available on KWESÉ PLAY - Philadelphia 76ers take on Boston Celtics.

The fact that they crossed 50 wins off their list, means that they have a loftier ambition for this new term. Embiid has talked about the Conference Finals, and Simmons has the Rubicon of being named an All-Star, to cross.

For both sets of ambitions, it all starts from this game.

The Sixers lost their first three games last year, including four of the first five. The second of those losses was at home to the same Celtics. Now, following a 2016-17 season where they won 28 games, nobody expected much from the young side. However, they won more than 50 games last season, and followed it up with a Second Round playoff appearance. Plus, the continuous talk of achieving more, expectations have soared. And the Sixers will now be under more scrutiny.

For the Celtics, the return of Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward, means that a good team became better; and also, for them a Conference Finals loss – which was considered an achievement last season, would be seen as a failure this time around. Last season, Boston lost the first two games before going on a 16-game winning run; most fans would want them making it an 18-game run, or more, to open the season. This is a game that will go some ways to define the year for both teams, and the fans will enjoy every minute of it.

For fans in Africa, the presence of players with roots from the continent, will give the opening night games an extra edge: newly-minted All-Star and All-NBA centre, Joel Embiid will be in action for the Philadelphia Sixers; while Congolese-French player Guerschon Yabusele and Nigerian-American Semi Ojeleye will be in the Celtics team.
