Hmong youth are typically very shy to flirt publicly in the daytime. Instead of love letters, young lovers use the ncas in their romantic pursuits. Its subtle and dulcet notes encourages an intimate secrecy between young Hmong boys and girls in love. The ncas is traditionally used by the Hmong people in courtship and clever couples can use the instrument as a private form of communication. Since the Hmong language is a tonal language, if you can understand the Hmong language and tonal notes, you can combine the spoken word and verbal tones and speak in a secret musical language with the ncas. Unfortunately, the majority of the Hmong generation born and raised in the United States have lost this ncas playing skill, as well as this romantic tradition.
