Drive down East Market Street or through neighborhoods off Phillips Avenue, and you'll see the economic despair that creates conditions for crime. While West Greensboro attracts development and investment, East Greensboro gets lip service and minimal resources.
Multiple shootings occur in East Greensboro neighborhoods monthly, but they barely register in local news coverage unless they're particularly spectacular. Families living in these communities deal with gunfire, drug activity, and violence that wealthier Greensboro residents never witness.
The High Point Road corridor has become particularly dangerous, with multiple businesses closing due to crime concerns. Gas stations in the area have been robbed repeatedly. Apartment complexes deal with regular violence that terrifies residents but receives minimal police attention.
Why Greensboro's Approach Isn't Working
Greensboro Police Department is understaffed and overworked. The city continues hiring new officers, but retention remains a serious problem. Experienced officers leave for better-paying departments or retire early, leaving GPD perpetually training new recruits who lack street experience.
Community policing sounds great in theory, but when officers are constantly responding to emergency calls, there's no time for relationship-building in neighborhoods. Residents don't trust police. Police feel unsupported by city leadership. And violence continues.
Economic Despair Fuels Crime

When legitimate employment doesn't pay living wages, drug dealing looks like a rational economic choice to young people with few options.
