The New City Jewish Center "Book of Remembrance"

Dear Congregant,
We never truly forget our loved ones that have been taken from us and gone to their eternal resting place. During the High Holidays this is even more so. In loving testimony you can honor the memory of departed family members and friends by having their names included in our Book of Remembrance. It will also contain memorial prayers and inspirational readings for comfort and reflection.
You can honor the memory of loved ones for a donation of $18 Chai for each individual to be thoughtfully included in our Book of Remembrance. This is a unique opportunity to honor their memory and support the New City Jewish Center as well.
Please indicate on the form below the names you would like listed and return it with your donation as soon as possible and no later than Sept.16th.
The names we have on record by the NCJC office of congregants and congregant relatives who have passed away during the past year will be included in the Book of Remembrance regardless of contribution.

TICKETS
All members in good standing of New City Jewish Center are entitled to a High Holiday Ticket as a thank you for your patronage and support of the synagogue.
If you have an outstanding balance owed to the congregation, including all tuitions or unpaid monies from a previous year, please call the office at 845-638-9600 x104 during business hours to arrange for payment.
Once a member is deemed in good standing, the ticket will be sent by mail prior to the high holidays.
The bookkeeper is available Monday - Thursday: 9am - 4pm.
In addition the office will be open Monday, Sept. 12-Thursday Sept. 15:
In the evening 6pm - 8pm.
The bookkeeper is in only on Monday evening, Sept. 12.

CALENDAR
It's calendar time! Information for the year will be displayed on our web page calendar at www.newcityjc.org. If you prefer a hard copy, please contact the office and we will print one for you. As in years past, it will include the synagogue's calendar of events, information on the holidays, and other useful facts. We will also be listing birthdays, anniversaries, B'nai Mitzvah, weddings, and yahrzeits. The cost of the listings is as follows: Birthdays, anniversaries, and yahrzeits can be listed for $5 each (or four for $18). Bar/Bat Mitzvah or wedding celebrations occurring during the calendar year may be listed for $20 each. Please return the form on the separate page as soon as possible. The calendar deadline is September 9th .
A Special Topic For The Book Of Every Other Month Club
Attention:
Members of the New City Jewish Center who speak Yiddish, members of the NCJC who do not speak Yiddish but who DO understand it when you hear it spoken, and people who are just plain interested in Yiddish:
NCJC's Book-Of-The-Every-Other-Month-Club will be meeting on Monday night, October 24, at 8 PM, to listen as Anne Letzter leads us in a discussion of "Outwitting History" by Aaron Lansky. The title of this book gives no clue as to what is "Outwitting History" so many of our members would not be enticed to attend this particular book review.
But you must know that it is Yiddish books that are "outwitting history" and this true tale told by Aaron Lansky is amazing, extremely easy to read, and it is so much fun, you won't believe it! In the book we read phrases which many, if not most, of us grew up hearing in our homes, and maybe there will be some phrases which we still use to this day.
This all being true, it is suggested that if you are interested, get a copy of the book to read and then come to this meeting of the Book of the Every Other Month Club to listen to Anne and to participate as we all interact with each other. Truth to tell, if you do not actually get to read the book, come anyway; you will almost assuredly enjoy the discussion.
We meet in the classroom which is all the way down on the left in the old school hall, and we can haul in extra chairs to our hearts' content. IF we outgrow this room, I am sure Sharon will find us a larger venue.
Incidentally, the book is available on Kindle for $9.99 and, as many of you know, you get the book VERY quickly!

Scotch & Study in the Sukkah -Oct 18
Join friends for conviviality and learning in the NCJC sukkah.
You are invited to get together with men's club members (whether or not you are a member) to sample varieties of scotch and other libations.
Rabbi Berkman will lead us in discussing a topic related to men and Sukkot.
Optionally, bring a favorite bottle of scotch to share.
The get together will take place rain or shine after evening services.
