A couple of months ago a friend sent me an email about a journalism taster night. I’ve thought about journalism before and it was free - so, I signed up. Tuesday morning I received an email reminding me of this. I had, of course, forgotten.
I went along anyway and it was actually really good. The evening was run by NewsAssociates and the aim of it was to get people interested in their NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) course.
We were set a 2 hour challenge where we were writing for the front page of ‘The Birmingham Mail’ when breaking news appeared. We were given a word limit of 250-270 and throughout the 2 hours or so, new facts appeared, interviews happened and a number of things were thrown our way that we had to sift through.
This is what I came up with:
(Disclaimer: these are not real events. No one needs to panic)
“A large explosion occurred at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) this afternoon around 2:04pm. Possibly consisting of three or four loud bangs, the explosion has been heard as far away as Lozells and Perry Barr, seven miles from the incident. The police believe it was a gas explosion and say that they “are not treating it as suspicious”. There have been 60 casualties so far, with 10 being in a critical condition and no fatalities reported. Emergency services were on the scene within 5 minutes according to the police.
Simon Chiles who was inside the NEC at the time says there were five or six groups of people setting up for a UCAS university fair tomorrow and that the scene was “pandemonium”. As well as the fair there were meetings with HSBC and EDF within the building. John Hodgson, an eyewitness on Sky News claimed it was “the loudest thing I’ve ever heard”, saying the windows of his coach exploded. A BBC listener, Alan Richards, said that he saw Heartlands Hospital preparing to meet large amounts of victims “like they are arriving from a war zone”. It has been confirmed that two other hospitals will also be treating any causalities from the scene. It is unknown whether the Airport or Railways station adjacent suffered from the incident.
The explosion has caused delays and closures along the M42, M6 and A45, with roads around the airport being congested.

My word count ended up being 253, which I wasn’t unhappy with. I do feel that I missed out on a few bits of important information and the writing style is lacking but seeming as other people were really struggling to get their word count down, I felt a little smug. We are still waiting for feedback though, they could think that my efforts were horrendous and that I should avoid journalism forever.
All in all it was a really fun and interesting evening. If you ever find yourself fancying the idea of journalism I’d definitely recommend their taster night – it’s free, what have you got to lose?
