hmm the more i think about doug’s mutation (with, again, limited memory of exactly how it’s presented in canon) the more it feels like pattern recognition that tends towards communicative patterns (until he’s resurrected and he’s finding patterns Everywhere)
and i have Emotions about how autistic that is, and how an autistic kid might unconsciously focus his emerging pattern-comprehension superpower towards things like his interests (programming!) and communicating with people using social rules he has a hard time grasping otherwise
like, so much of my energy as an autistic person is put into “how do i interact with this person in a socially acceptable way,” and i can so see doug focusing his mutation on that and then just...assuming that that’s how it works bc ‘language’ is where he can see its effects, and it becomes a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy
